AFLDD MATCH REPORT
Toowoomba Tigers vs. Goondiwindi Hawks
Round 10 – 5 June 2010
Whilst Toowoomba Tigers may have maintained their unbeaten record recording a hard fought 49 point win over the Hawks, Goondiwindi overcame their final quarter hoodoo applying constant defensive pressure to their opposition.
Goondiwindi scored the first goal in the opening minutes from Joel Neilsen’s boot, but the Tigers were quick to reply with a goal of their own. What followed was some very scrappy play. Neither team could hold their marks or pick up the ball cleanly, however the Tigers were able to get the ball into their forward line more regularly. Tigers going into the first term break with a 19-point lead.
The Hawks had the better run of play during the second term through the efforts of Joe Verney and Dave O’Toole. Whilst Goondiwindi outscored the Tigers, Tigers fought back for control towards the end of the quarter. Tigers still in front by 17 points at the main break.
Only two goals were scored in the third term while both teams battled hard for clean possession. Tigers had the wind in this quarter but could not capitalise, the Hawks defence stood strong. On the other side of the ledger, Goondiwindi were also unable to convert, the Tigers defence equally as solid. Tigers still in front at the final change.
Hawks’ brothers, Cam and Andy Thomas, contributed strongly to the team’s performance whilst Matt Starling and players’ player, Stuart Lowe, battled bravely to help Goondiwindi overcome their final quarter hoodoo. The Hawks battled defiantly, having the run of play and greater possession in the final stanza but were unable to convert in front of goal.
Tigers battled hard to regain control in the latter part of the final quarter to snap a couple of quick goals before the final siren. Tigers’ Patrick Walton and John Hahn fought strongly all game for the black and gold Tigers.
Both coaches agreed that the match was a constant tussle with possession changing hands regularly; a great battle of footy.
Hawks coaching staff was very pleased with the team’s efforts and although they did not capitalise on the scoreboard, their ability to run out the final quarter was a great improvement on previous matches. “The Hawks’ ability to disrupt the opposition’s set plays and apply defensive pressure was a highlight of the game”, according to coaching staff.
Russ Baldock, one half of the Hawks’ brains trust, played his 200th game for the green and gold. Russ continually backs up his teammates, gives 100% and provides a strong presence on the field every match. It was unfortunate that the team was not able to provide a fitting win to Russ’ commitment to the Hawks.
Russ believes that the youth and talent in the team is what keeps his commitment to the club strong.
On 19 June, the Hawks host Souths Bombers and it will be during this game, that the Hawks will celebrate Russ’ milestone in front of a parochial home crowd at Riddles Oval.
