AFLDD MATCH REPORT
Highfields Lions vs. Goondiwindi Hawks
Round 8 – 22 May 2010
An 8 goal final quarter barrage gave the Highfields Lions a 47-point victory over the Goondiwindi Hawks.
From the first bounce, the Lions showed plenty of determination, whilst the Hawks were a little slow to get into the game, unable to gather the ball cleanly. Both teams battled hard for the
ball with Highfields making more of their opportunities to lead at the first change by 12 points.
The Hawks outplayed the Lions in the second quarter, with Goondiwindi quickly upping their work rate. Although clean possessions still eluded the Hawks they put their bodies on the line to gain possession, with Highfields’ frustration boiling over in physical encounters.
Hawks’ centre, Andy Thomas, once again played a pivotal role in changing the tone of thematch, clearing the ball from the centre ballups regularly and chasing down his opponents.
As the half time siren sounded, Goondiwindi had managed to retake control of the game and go into the break with a slender 1-point advantage.
The third term showed that there was no shortage of intensity by either team, with possession of the ball changing hands regularly, neither team dominating. The Hawks were not able to reliably hold their marks or kick to targets and these basic errors contributed to the Hawks
woes.
Both teams only managed two goals a piece with Highfields having more scoring shots but Goondiwindi were still in touch at the final break, just 3 points down.
Hawks’ Matt Leven, playing in a new position at fullback, stepped up to his new responsibilities with relish and provided Goondiwindi with stability in the backline and battling hard to stop the Lions’ forward thrusts towards goal.
The final quarter undid everything that the Hawks had tried to achieve in the first three quarters. A lack of cohesion by the Hawks and an inability to stick to the game plan led to a Lions goal scoring spree, kicking 8 goals to 1 goal to seal a comprehensive win over the Hawks.
It was a disappointing loss for the team as they had made great strides forward over the past few weeks. The next few matches are important and the Hawks will need to hold strong against the stronger teams.
This week Goondiwindi host the 2009 Premiers, Coolaroo, at Riddles oval and after Coolaroo’s loss last week to the Toowoomba Tigers, the Roos will be looking to return to the winners circle. The Hawks will be keen to put this loss aside and put their best foot forward against the Roos in front of their home crowd.

Goondiwindi Hawks vs South Bombers
Round 8 – 22 May 2010
The Under 16 Junior Hawks caused an upset last Saturday by defeating their more fanciedopposition, Souths Bombers, by 12 points.
With the Hawks Under 14s having a bye, players were fresh and available to run on for the Under 16s in their battle against the in-form Bombers. The Hawks lending the opposition 2 players, in order to play 11-a-side football. What a game it was!
From the first ball up won by Tyson Haigel, the Hawks showed their opposition that they had a game on their hands. Although the Bombers were more skilful, the Hawks second and third efforts to gain possession of the ball were impressive. They played cohesive team football with every member of the team contributing well.
Sheer determination was the method employed by the junior Hawks to get them to the final siren, causing the upset of the season. Tyson Haigel rucked and ran tirelessly, whilst younger brother, Ashley Haigel, played the game of his life, taking marks and tackling his
much bigger opponents.
Hawks’ Matt North played a pivotal role in the forward line and made his presence felt whilst Lachie Tulloch never gave up, running hard and chasing his opponents all game.
Gus McLaughlin stepped up in the final quarter, playing like a man possessed and giving a much-needed breather to the on-ballers.
It was the sweetest of all victories for the Hawks; the last time these two teams met the Bombers scored a comprehensive victory.
