AFLDD MATCH REPORT
Lockyer Valley Demons vs. Goondiwindi Hawks
Round 6 – 8 May 2010
Goondiwindi Hawks scored their second win in a row, demolishing newcomers Lockyer Valley Demons by 130 points.
In the first quarter, both teams started strongly and while the Demons had more possession in the opening minutes, the Hawks fought back quickly and effectively scoring the first goal through Tom Maunder’s accuracy in front of goal. Lockyer tackled hard but Goondiwindi’s teamwork excelled creating many scoring opportunities.
The Hawks went into the quarter time break with a 48-point lead.
There was no shortage of intensity by either team in the second quarter, with the Demons drawing first blood scoring the first goal. Hawks bounced back with some great passages of play and continued to increase their lead by winning contests around the ground; going into the half time break with a 71-point buffer.
After the main break, Lockyer came out strongly applying pressure to the Hawks and tackling fiercely. Nevertheless, Goondiwindi held firm and battled energetically for every possession. Undisciplined play by the Demons created extra opportunities for the Hawks kicking a few quick goals before the final change, to extend their solid lead.
Lockyer’s Harley Hicks played hard all game whilst Hawks’ players’ player winner, Andy Thomas’ second and third efforts in the centre fighting for every possession was inspirational.
Young Hawk Stuart Lowe, playing a pivotal role in the match, fought gamely in the ruck while big man, Joel Neilsen, played his best game to date, tackling hard, marking strongly and scoring goals. Eric Maunder, as Hawks’ chief goal scorer, was dominant in front of goal in the second half, while Cam Thomas provided plenty of spark across the paddock.
Goondiwindi Hawks dominated the final quarter but squandered goal-scoring opportunities, even though Lockyer never stopped trying.
Hawks’ coaching staff stated “We’re pleased with the win and it’s good to score two in a row.The team continues to improve each week and our young blokes stood tall today.”
This week the seniors have a bye, whilst the junior Hawks host Pittsworth/Millmerran Power in Under 12s and Under 14s at Riddles oval. Come along and support our juniors.
