Goondiwindi Hawks vs. Dalby Swans
Round 5 – 1 May 2010
Goondiwindi Hawks scored their first win of the 2010 season, leading at every change, to record a decisive 58 point win over the Dalby Swans at Riddles Oval.
Hawks’ Jeremy Leahy kicked the first goal for Goondiwindi from the opening bounce creating a positive opening few minutes for the Hawks. Dalby fought back strongly keeping possession of the ball in their half, but were inaccurate in front of goal. Goondiwindi picked up the pace of their game, gaining more possessions and through some skilful team play were accurate in converting their shots for goal.
A fired up Swans side took to the field in the second quarter, scoring the first goal of the term. Dalby’s James Kratzmann was everywhere directing his players. Goondiwindi responded quickly but missed in front of goal. Hawks regrouped, displaying some excellent passages of play with accurate passing allowing elusive goal sneak, Michael Lynn, opportunities in front of goal.
Hawks’ veteran, Darryl Martin, tackled and chased hard and showed a level head. Andy Thomas’ battled hard in the centre and his clearing kicks were a feature of the Hawks’ game, whilst Stuart Lowe rucked tirelessly.
Hawks increased their lead, going into the long break with a 37 point advantage.
After the break, Hawks’ momentum towards goal continued but the Swans continued to battle hard. Both teams fought for every possession, having fairly even shots at goal with the Hawks more accurate in front of goal and going into the final term with a comfortable lead.
In the final quarter Dalby started strongly and had the better run of play, yet ill discipline by Dalby cost them crucial possessions. The Hawks quickly capitalised on this and stepped up their efforts fighting hard for every possession, their goal in sight.
At the final siren, a jubilant Hawks team celebrated singing their team song with gusto.
Goondiwindi coaching staff was happy to have a win vowing that the team is keen to do it more often. “The boys stuck to their game plan better than previous games and it was more of a team effort. They continue to improve every week.”
