AFLDD MATCH REPORT
Warwick Redbacks vs. Goondiwindi Hawks
Anzac Cup
Round 4 – 24 April 2010
In the true spirit of the Anzacs, the Warwick Redbacks and the Goondiwindi Hawks went into battle for the annual Warwick Anzac Cup; the Redbacks 74 point victors. The scoreboard did not accurately reflect the toughness of the match nor the fighting spirit by both teams.
There was no shortage of intensity by either team and Goondiwindi were quick to draw first blood kicking the first goal of the match from the boot of Jeremy Leahy. The Redbacks responded just as quickly with the next two goals. The first quarter was evenly balanced with the Redbacks holding a slender 4 point lead at the first break.
After the break, both teams came out firing and, once again, the Hawks opened the second quarter tally with the first goal. The Redbacks fired back quickly with two goals. It was a fierce tussle for every possession. At the main break, the Hawks were still in touch but the Redbacks held a 21-point buffer.
The Hawks welcomed the return of Joel Barr to the line up, and Hawks’ veteran, Russell Baldock, battled hard whilst Brent Townsend at fullback made his presence felt.
Matches are one and lost in the premiership quarter and the Redbacks were at times, regimental in their centre clearances and marking contests, increasing their lead in the third quarter, whilst Goondiwindi continued to battle hard.
Redback’s Clint McErvale was strong in the forward line as was Brendan Iles in the centres, both contributing to a positive Warwick team effort.
Warwick were too strong in the final quarter kicking 8 goals to retain the Anzac Cup with the Redbacks’ Brendan Iles being awarded the Anzac Medal for best player.
The Hawks have had the toughest draw meeting all the top teams in the first rounds and even though they have been competitive, the team will need to improve on their basic skills and stick to their game plan.
This Saturday the Hawks will host the Dalby Swans in both juniors and seniors at Riddles Oval and will be looking to turn their fortunes around.
