AFLDD MATCH REPORT
Goondiwindi Hawks vs. University Cougars
Round 3 – 17 April 2010
A final term 8 goal barrage turned a third quarter deficit by University into a match winning performance, Cougars defeating the Goondiwindi Hawks by 44 points.
The Goondiwindi Hawks started the match with plenty of enthusiasm, determined to turn their fortunes around. The Hawks had plenty of possession in the first term but squandered opportunities. Great defence by the Cougars kept them in the game, Hawks leading at the first change by two goals.
Second quarter performances were pretty even across the field, both teams battling hard for every possession. Hawks, Stuart Lowe, rucked tirelessly against University’s seasoned veteran, Paul Kuptke.
Centre, Eric Maunder (playing his 50th game for the Hawks) regularly ensured centre clearances to forward pocket, Andy Thomas. Phil Starling gave a sterling performance throughout the match. Dave O’Toole was once again in everything, finishing off the team’s forward thrusts accurately in front of goal. Hawks went into the half time break still in front.
A renewed Hawks team started the third quarter with plenty of fire, kicking a couple of goals to bring it to a 5 goal lead midway through the third term. The Hawks allowed their intensity to drop, permitting the Cougars to regain control of the ball and kick a couple of quick goals before the third quarter siren, edging them closer to the Hawks score line.
The final term was a complete reversal. The Cougars pressured the Hawks at every turn to kick an 8 goal haul to win the battle comfortably.
Although trying to focus on the positives and there were plenty, Hawks were disappointed in their ability to finish off and allow the Cougars to run over the top of them in that final quarter.
With some players to return from injury in the coming weeks, their presence on the field will make a difference.
Goondiwindi travel to Warwick to play the Redbacks next week. The Redbacks took the match to the 2009 Premiers on Saturday, so it will take a full match performance from the Hawks to come away with a win.
