AFLDD MATCH REPORT
Goondiwindi Hawks vs. Toowoomba Tigers
Round 1 – 27 March 2010
A physical encounter in extreme conditions best describes the Hawks vs Tigers match played on Saturday at Goondiwindi’s Riddles Oval; a high quality match for the first round of theAFLDD season.
Toowoomba Tigers got the early jump on the Hawks kicking the first few goals before Goondiwindi fought back kicking their first goal to claw their way back into the match. Tigers took an early 19 point lead into the first break.
A fantastic goal from Hawks new recruit, Max Richardson, spurred the Hawks into action early in the second quarter and from that point on, the match was evenly poised with neither team willing to concede possession. Tigers went into the half time break still in front with a 22 point lead
Goondiwindi players battled hard in the third quarter to regain some control, scoring the first two goals through some excellent team play beautifully finished off by Jeremy Leahy. It was not long before the Tigers fought back.
The match was truly of a high standard; full of intensity and passion and great contests for the ball. Goondiwindi valiantly applied continuous pressure to the Tigers’ forwards in an effort to slow their forward momentum. Although it was a 30 point ballgame at the final break, the Hawks had done enough to stay in touch. It would come down to a final quarter showdown.
Tigers were too regimental and the young Hawks were not able to stay in touch but they never stopped trying. Hawks were a little disappointed in their lapses of concentration especially in the final quarter allowing the Tigers to grab a stranglehold on the match, taking the match by 58 points.
Hawks’ new coach, Dave O’Toole, was pleased with his charges overall effort; it was a solid start to the season. Hawks’ players Ben Herde, Matt Brown and Max Richardson all performed extremely well.
