AFLDDJ MATCH REPORT
Pittsworth/Millmerran Power vs. Goondiwindi Hawks
Round 12 – 24 June 2011
SENIORS - BYE
JUNIOR HAWKS
Under 14s
After a desperate final quarter surge, Goondiwindi Hawks scored a “come from behind” 20 point win over the Pittsworth/Millmerran Power in the only match of the round for the Junior Hawks at Pittsworth.
The Hawks hierarchy was desperate for a win in this match to secure a decent percentage boost to propel the Hawks up the AFL Darling Downs Juniors ladder.
Goondiwindi travelled well and with superior player numbers available for the match, the Hawks lent the Power four players. Jordan and Rowan Dunmill, Brianna Bates and Jess Bell are to be thanked and commended for their efforts in playing for the opposition. Pittsworth/Millmerran rewarded Goondiwindi by playing with an extra player in the first quarter and two extra players for part of the second quarter.
Goondiwindi Hawks were flat and showed little commitment to the ball for the first half of the game, with only Xander Naismith showing signs of any real desire to be involved.
Max Beinke’s arrival early in the second quarter provided some much-needed structure in the forward line allowing Goondiwindi to apply pressure to their opponents. This led to Hawks’ possession and conversion in front of goal, with Pittsworth/Millmerran’s lead being whittled down to just 6 points at the half time break.
After the long break, the Hawks continued on the same vein as the first two quarters showing no real interest in fighting for possession of the football; Pittsworth were using their superior height and skills to outplay a lack lustre Hawks outfit.
Coach Craig Naismith, at the final change, implored his charges to dig deep and work harder if they wanted to play finals football.
The Hawks responded to the call with the skilful midfield of Hagiel, Naismith and McNaughton stepping up and finally taking control, driving the ball deep into attack. The backline tightened up in defence with Jordan Doolan, Sam McNaughton and Jack Martin repelling many attacking raids and sending the Hawks forward many times. Gilbert and Makayla Bell were strong in the forward line with Makayla bagging her first goal for the year.
The final quarter provided a glimpse of what this Hawks’ team is capable of as they completely outplayed the Power.
Hawks’ best on ground was Max Beinke, Jordan Doolin and Xander Naismith. Rowan Dunmill was also commended for playing a great game for the opposition.
Saturday’s win secures fourth spot on the AFLDDJ Under 14 ladder for the Hawks behind Souths on percentage. The Hawks 14s will need to play four quarters of football and keep up the pressure on their opponents in the coming matches to have a chance of playing finals football.
