AFLDD MATCH REPORT
Goondiwindi Hawks vs. Souths Bombers
Round 11 – 18 June 2011
In their Round 2 clash in Toowoomba, the Bombers scraped together a 19 point win over the Hawks and the Hawks were keen to put the Bombers under pressure again this time round. The Bombers ran out comfortable 111-point winners.
From the opening siren, the Goondiwindi Hawks battled to stay with their opposition and gain possession, while the Bombers continually converted in front of goal.
In the windy conditions, the bounce of the ball did not favour the Hawks and it proved to be a scrappy game. Souths were highly skilful using the handball very effectively throughout the match.
After struggling early and allowing the Bombers free reign, the Hawks backline picked up their game and fought hard against the Bombers, re-gaining possession many times.
With injuries taking their toll on Goondiwindi’s small player list, coupled with work commitments, many Hawks players found themselves playing out of position, making the task harder for the Hawks to be effective.
Hawks’ Players Player, Michael Lynn, once again showed his determination taking contested marks against his Souths opponents in backline and when swapped onto the ball, he again stood tall. Cam Goulter fought valiantly for every possession while Daryl Martin was tireless around the ground.
Hawks Brent Townsend, Andy Thomas and Tyson Hagiel tackled hard and chased down their opposition, many times turning over possession to the Hawks.
Hawks coach, Stephen Dukes, said at the end of the match “We were not used to the play on game by Souths and we struggled with that, but on the positive side, we got our head over the ball, supported each other, tackled hard and chased relentlessly.”
Thanks to Stuart Lowe for pulling on the Hawks jumper to help out his former team and welcome back Richard Clark to the Hawks nest.
Congratulations to Joel Drier on playing his 50th game for the Hawks and to Josh Bodker on kicking his first senior goal.
The Hawks again acknowledge and thank the following for their assistance on Saturday - Hawks junior players, Jack Martin and Ash Hagiel, for running water, Jack Dunmill as runner and Phil Bell and Karen Dunmill for their first aid assistance.
This week the Hawks seniors have a bye and their next match is a home game against the Warwick Redbacks on 9 July.

HAWKS JUNIORS
Under 12s
The Goondiwindi Under 12 Hawks enjoyed their highest player numbers yet in a show that their lack of success on the field is not affecting their enthusiasm for the game. The Hawks Mighty Midgets were again dwarfed by their bigger, skilful opponents but they never gave up
The Hawks were out-gunned until half time when the players were urged to go out and enjoy themselves. This proved to be the catalyst for the young Hawks to lift their intensity around the ground and restrict the scoring ability of the Bombers for the remainder of the match. Souths were too strong for the Hawks; in front at the final siren.
Tasmin Timms and Jess Bell were best on ground with Cooper Timms, Rowan Dunmill, and Zac Lowe having solid games for the Hawks.
Coach Craig Naismith was pleased with the Mini Hawks performance and the smiles on the faces of his team said it all – they enjoyed themselves.
Final Scores were not available.
Under 14s
With the Souths Bombers sitting in third position on the AFLDDJ ladder and the Goondiwindi Hawks sitting in fourth spot, this match promised to be a cracker.
The Under 14’s Hawks provided the highlight of the day securing a thrilling 1 point win over the 3rd placed Souths Bombers. Once again the Hawks started slowly allowing their opposition to gain the upper hand. Luckily the backline led by Brody Martin and Jordan Doolan repelled many Bomber attacks, with Sam McNaughton making his debut for the Hawks and playing very well.
After half time the classy Hawks mid field of Alex McNaughton, Ash Haigel and Zac Naismith clicked into action and the crowd was riveted to their seats with some excellent attacking football as the Hawks slowly ran down the Bombers lead.
The Hawks stuck to their game plan with the backline standing tall and solid repelling many attacks from the Bombers forward line. The Hawks 5 goal performance in the premiership quarter changed the tone of the match
Souths came home with a wind in their sail in the latter stages of the final quarter, but the Hawks stood tall against the barrage and held a 1 point advantage when the final siren sounded.
