AFLDD MATCH REPORT
Goondiwindi Hawks vs. Dalby Swans
Round 5 – 30 April 2011
An under strength Goondiwindi Hawks team was no match for the Dalby Swans, compiling a 9 goal final term to seal a 95-point victory at Riddles Oval last weekend.
Goondiwindi started strongly with some positive team play brilliantly finished off with young Travis Sheahan kicking his first senior goal for the Hawks. The Hawks grabbed every opportunity in the first quarter with some good attack at the footy, leading to plenty of possessions.
The Swans lifted their game in the latter stages of the first quarter, taking control of the game and turning the game around in their favour. The Swans went into the first term break holding onto a slight advantage at the first change.
Dalby fought harder for the ball in the second term, gaining plenty of possessions with greater frequency, putting the Hawks under pressure. The Hawks displayed touches of their usual determination but the Swans desperation for the footy was greater than the Hawks and thereby increased their lead at the half time break.
A more determined Goondiwindi team battled hard in the third term against their opponents, keeping pace with Dalby but were unable to make up more ground by edging closer to their score. Once again, the Swans led at the final change.
Basic skills errors crept into the Hawks’ game, allowing the Swans to swoop picking up plenty of possessions and taking many uncontested marks, leaving the Hawks floundering in the final term. The Hawks were no match for the Dalby Swans, who were jubilant at the final siren with their second win of the season.
There were a hand full of Hawks’ players who continued to battle hard for the Hawks – Tyson Haigel, Andy Thomas, Ben Kent, Lachie Tulloch (who played a game of rugby beforehand), Cam Thomas and Darryl Martin.
Hawk’s young players really stood up and gave it everything they had and were a credit to themselves and to the club.
A highlight at the end of the match was the presenting of awards from the Goondiwindi Old Boys to young members of the Hawks – Tyson Haigel and Lachie Tulloch – well deserved as they played hard and made a difference to the game.
With players to return from injury and work commitments, it is hoped that the Hawks can improve on Saturday’s performance. The Hawks travel to Toowoomba to play the University Cougars this week and will need to stick to their game plan and play a full four quarters of football.
