AFLDD MATCH REPORT
Goondiwindi Hawks vs. Lockyer Valley Demons
Round 7 – 14 May 2011
Goondiwindi, playing in front of a home crowd, snared their first victory of the 2011 season with a comprehensive victory over the Lockyer Valley Demons side.
In recent weeks, the Goondiwindi Hawks have had to face many challenges not the least of which is playing as a team. The Hawks did that on Saturday, played as a team.
It was the battle of the bottom two teams on the AFLDD ladder with the Hawks starting strongly kicking seven goals and dominating play leading into the second term with a 32 point buffer.
The question was – could the Hawks continue with this great display of team work.
Hawks’ second and third quarter performances mirrored the first with plenty of drive throught out the field as Goondiwindi demonstrated that they could play four quarters of football.
Goondiwindi’s backline stood tall led by Eric Maunder and Matt Starling, creating plenty of pressure on the Demons forwards and repelling any attacks towards goal. At the other end of the ground, Goondiwindi’s forward line worked well as a unit with Joe Verney leading the way, kicking 17 goals at full forward. One of Hawks’ Brains Trust, Darryl Martin, played an inspiring game on the wing.
Hawks’ young brigade led the charge with Tyson Hagiel, in the dual role of ruckman resting at full forward, played another outstanding game and was ever dependable in whatever position he was on the field. Captain, Jeremy Leahy, battled hard in the middle all game, whilst Brent Townsend provided great support in the middle and formed part of the solid defence unit when in the backline.
A highlight of the match was the goal by Michael Lynn after running through the middle of the field from the back line to kick a massive goal.
In the final term, the Hawks took their foot off the pedal a little and the Demons took full advantage kicking four goals and letting Goondiwindi know that the game was not over until the final siren.
Full credit goes to the Lockyer Valley Demons, after travelling 3hours for the match, they never gave up and after having their seventh match in a row, must be congratulated on their great attitude.
Coach, Stephen Dukes, was pleased with his team’s efforts, “The boys played as a team for the entire match. There was no selfish play.” “It was good to get a win on the board to build confidence but it was more important for the team to stick to the game plan and work together as a team. They did that this week.”
This week the Hawks and Junior Hawks travel to Toowoomba next Saturday to play Coolaroo at Gold Park.
Congratulations to Hawks’ Jeremy Leahy, Andy Thomas, Tyson Hagiel, Joel Barr and Steve Collett on being selected in the AFL Darling Downs representative team training squad.
