AFLDD MATCH REPORT
Warwick Redbacks vs Goondiwindi Hawks
Round 4 – 16 April 2011
ANZAC CUP
In front of a parochial Warwick crowd and following the traditional Anzac Day ceremony, the Warwick Redbacks retained the Anzac Cup after their 69-point win over an under strength Goondiwindi Hawks outfit.
Goondiwindi came out in the first quarter on the front foot, determined to make a strong start. Warwick Redbacks scored the first goal of the match, yet the quarter belonged to the young Hawks.
Despite not having a full team available, the Goondiwindi Hawks played with plenty of spirit and determination not to be out-manoevered by the taller more physical Redbacks team. The young Hawks outplayed Warwick right across the ground in the first term, scoring 7 goals to 3.
The Redbacks fought back strongly in the second term, taking the game up to the Hawks. Both teams played pressure football in the heavy conditions scrambling for every possession. Warwick squaring the score by the long break.
The third quarter proved to the undoing of the young Hawks. The Redbacks took control of the quarter, despite their inaccuracy in front of goal. Goondiwindi suffered from ill discipline which allowed Warwick to score un-checked. The Redbacks led by 32 points at the final change.
Whilst the Hawks were determined to finish the game on a positive note, injuries finally took their toll. The intensity of both teams made for a battle royale in the final term. Goondiwindi’s young brigade tried hard but the Redbacks were on a roll and proved too strong in front of goal.
Goondiwindi’s Corbin Sellen, Brent Townsend, Myles Sheahan and Parker Baxter tried valiantly all game, running and tackling hard. Joe Verney and Joel Drier played their best game for the Hawks this season, whilst Players’ Player, Andy Thomas, gained many possessions.
The Warwick Redbacks earned the right to retain the Anzac Cup but the scoreboard was not a true reflection of the battle waged that day. The Hawks’ endeavour could not be questioned.
On 30 April, the Hawks will host the Dalby Swans in Under 12s, Under 14s and seniors and will be another classic battle in each grade.
