AMENDED AFLDD MATCH REPORT
Goondiwindi Hawks vs Highfields Lions
Round 17 – 7 August 2010
Awesome team effort! That’s what typified the Goondiwindi Hawks’ 53-point win over Highfields Lions last Saturday in their final home game of the season.
Highfields pounced in the first term gaining more possession of the ball and converting whilst the Hawks were slow off the mark, struggling to get on top of their opposition. The Lions pressured the Hawks until the first break, leading by 16 points.
Goondiwindi completely turned the game around in the second quarter, increasing their intensity at the ball, tackling hard and contesting the ball at every opportunity. The Hawks outscored and outplayed Highfields to gain a slender advantage at the half time break.
Unselfish play by the Hawks’ Max Richardson and Jeremy Leahy, given their specific roles, played a major part in the team’s overall performance; they never stopped trying to outmanoeuvre their opponents.
Highfields once again challenged the Hawks at the start of the third term with a couple of quick goals to change the lead, yet the Hawks remained focused. Goondiwindi’s ability to get numbers to the ball increased dramatically allowing the Hawks great possession, scoring the next six goals to lead strongly at the final change.
Once again, Brent Townsend used his size and speed to advantage and Hawks’ ruckman, Stuart Lowe, in his first AFL season, continues to grow in confidence and ability. While the two Cams (Cam Thomas and Cam Goulter) made their presence felt, taking strong marks and tackling fiercely.
Hawks’ goal sneak, Michael Lynn, was impressive in the forward line judging the flight of the ball well and combining well with Dave O’Toole to score regularly in front of goal. .
The Hawks dominated play in the final term, although Highfields continued to battle for the ball. Goondiwindi was far too strong in front of goal to claim victory over the Lions.
Goondiwindi welcomed back Steve Collett who has spent all of the season out with injury. Steve’s experience, along with that of Darryl Martin, Russ Baldock and Dave O’Toole, guided the exuberance of the young Hawks.
Hawks’ coaching staff was pleased with the win citing, “The players’ ability to match their opponents, be first to the ball and even though we were undermanned, the team adapted to the game as it progressed. The team’s intensity was excellent”.
Goondiwindi’s remaining challenge for 2010 is whether they can knock Coolaroo out of the finals. It will make for an interesting match at Rockville Oval in Toowoomba this Saturday. The Junior Hawks will also play Coolaroo in all grades.
