Week 8 Sunday Women's SBL results

THE South West Slammers put an end to a five-game Women's SBL losing streak on Sunday beating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 92-68 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

Week 8 of the Women's SBL began on Friday night with the Stirling Senators beating the Joondalup Wolves 69-68 at Warwick Stadium and the Perth Redbacks downing the Rockingham Flames 85-74 at Belmont Oasis.

Then on Saturday night, the Perry Lakes Hawks beat the South West Slammers 62-37 at Eaton Recreation Centre, the Mandurah Magic downed the East Perth Eagles 70-52 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre and the Willetton Tigers defeated the Cockburn Cougars 82-67 at Wally Hagan Stadium.

Then on Sunday at Ray Owen Sports Centre, the final game of the weekend saw the South West Slammers win their third game of the season, running over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns in the fourth quarter to win 92-68.

Both teams entered Sunday's clash desperate to win.

Kalamunda had come in winning just one of eight games for the season while South West had started well winning two of its first three, but had lost five straight since.

And for three quarters it was a game right up for grabs.

At times during the first and third quarters, the Slammers did threaten to blow the game open but on each occasion the Easter Suns managed to pull it back and remain in touch.

At three quarter-time, the Suns had picked up the momentum with a strong finish to the third quarter to cut the Slammers' lead to just 60-57.

But the Slammers ran right over the top of the Suns in the fourth quarter despite having played the previous night at home to the Lady Hawks and making the trip to Kalamunda for the midday Sunday start.

Jennie Rintala fouling out early in the fourth didn’t help Kalamunda's cause, but the Slammers delivered their best quarter of the season playing with great flair and freedom to pile on 32 points to 11 to record the 24-point victory.

Brittany Hodges has been outstanding all season for the Slammers and stood tall again in Sunday's win with 30 points, 18 rebounds, four steals and four blocked shots on shooting 11-of-20 from the field and 8-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Courtney Bayliss also had a terrific afternoon for South West with 22 points, nine rebounds and three assists on the back of nailing six of her nine three-point attempts.

Georgia Denehey added 11 points, five assists and three rebounds for the Slammers, Kate Fielding 10 points, eight assists and seven boards, Tayah Burrows nine points, Raya Thompson five and Nardia Klem five.

Slammers coach Peter Harper was happy for his young group to be rewarded with the win.

"That last quarter is the best we've played all season, especially in transition. We had 12 or 14 fast break points and what we have been trying to implement was finally on show out on the floor," Harper said.

"It's nice to see it happen for the girls because they have worked hard. The last couple of weeks have been tough against some really good sides so it's good for the girls to get some reward for all that hard work.

"The girls are rapt with it. We only won two games all of last year and on average gave up nearly 90 points a game. Defensively we've been a lot of better and today we shot a lot better.

"Courtney went 6-of-9 and as a team we shot 50 per cent. Tayah hit 11 points as well and her and Hannah the last two games have been fantastic for us giving us energy off the bench. It's a real team effort."

It was a tough loss to take for the Eastern Suns but Melissa Moyle put in a strong showing with 21 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Before fouling out, Rintala had 12 points and six rebounds for the Suns while Tahlia Fejo contributed 11 points and seven boards, and Hannah King eight points and 10 rebounds.
