Week 7 Saturday night women's SBL results

IT was statement night on Saturday in the Women's SBL with the undefeated Mandurah Magic hammering the Joondalup Wolves on their home floor while the Lakeside Lightning won big over East Perth and the Perth Redbacks bounced back from losing on Friday.

Week 7 of the Women's SBL got underway on Friday night with the Perry Lakes Hawks beating the Perth Redbacks 79-63 at Belmont Oasis and the Willetton Tigers defeating the Rockingham Flames 83-75 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

There were then three matches on Saturday night with the Mandurah Magic beating the Joondalup Wolves 99-58, the Lakeside Lightning defeating the East Perth Eagles 87-58 and the Perth Redbacks prevailing over the Cockburn Cougars 73-70.

The Lady Wolfpack hosted the undefeated Magic on Saturday night at Joondalup Basketball Stadium with the home team looking to bounce back from successive losses to the Perth Redbacks and Lakeside Lightning.

The Magic, however, had not only been undefeated so far, but also barely tested this season to date. They showed why with quite the dominant performance over the team that won last year's minor premiership and played in the grand final.

For the second straight week, the Wolves were blown away early doors with the Magic leading by 12 points at quarter-time and 26 by the half with the 58-32 advantage.

Last week Joondalup stemmed the tide in the second half against Lakeside, but they couldn’t this time against Mandurah with the visitors going on to score the commanding 41-point triumph.

WNBL championship winner Carly Boag was the star of the night for Mandurah finishing with 28 points and 11 rebounds on the back of shooting 10-of-17 from the field, 2-of-3 from three-point territory and 6-of-10 from the charity stripe.

She had plenty of help too with Nici Gilday having 19 points and seven rebounds, Casey Mihovilovich 14 points, seven boards and six assists, and Morgan Ballantyne 10 points.

Klara Wischer top-scored for the Lady Wolfpack with 18 points, seven assists, six rebounds and five steals while Chelsea Belcher contributed 15 points and three steals, and Nikita Martin 11 points.

It was a much tighter affair at Wally Hagan Stadium with the Cougars looking for their second win of the season and the Redbacks out to bounce back from their winning run coming to the end at the hands of Perry Lakes on Friday night.

It was a close contest all the way through and once again Cockburn was on the wrong end of a narrow defeat with Perth closing out for the three-point victory.

Emilee Harmon battled hard on Friday night against the Hawks bigs who put plenty of physical pressure on her. She still contributed well and then bounced back on Saturday with 27 points and 12 rebounds on the back of shooting 9-of-15 from the floor and 9-of-12 at the line.

Rebecca Benson shot just 6-of-15 for the Redbacks but had a good all-round game with 19 points, three assists and three steals while Ajay Johnson contributed 14 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Brianna Moyes also shot just 5-of-15 for the Cougars but made a good contribution overall with 16 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Kersten Mitchell finished with 14 points and five rebounds for Cockburn while Lindsey Doucette had nine points and 13 boards, and Vanessa Michael eight points, seven boards and three steals.

Then at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre, the Lightning again showed their firepower. This time it was in the second half with Lakeside scoring 56 points to 33 to end up beating East Perth by 29 points.

Ash Grant played her first game of the season for the Lightning and made a big impact with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Sydnee Fipps added 14 points and six rebounds for Lakeside, Ali Schwagmeyer 12 points, nine boards and five assists, Paris Duffield 10 points and Tiahrn Flynn eight points.

Eryn Fisher top-scored for the Eagles with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists while Nicole Jorre St Jorre contributed 11 points, six boards, four steals and three assists.

Week 7 of the Women's SBL will conclude on Sunday afternoon at Willetton Basketball Stadium with the Willetton Tigers playing the South West Slammers.
