Week 6 ANZAC Day Men's SBL results

THE Willetton Tigers handed the Kalamunda Eastern Suns a second straight ANZAC Day thumping in the Men's SBL on Tuesday while the Cockburn Cougars beat the Rockingham Flames for their second win of the weekend.

There were two ANZAC Day matches in the Men's SBL with the Cockburn Cougars winning a tight battle over the Rockingham Flames 85-78 at Wally Hagan Stadium.

It wasn’t quite as tight at Ray Owen Sports Centre but it wasn’t anything like 12 months ago. This time around the Willetton Tigers defeated the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 103-79.

Week 6 of the Men's SBL began back on Friday night with the Joondalup Wolves defeating the Lakeside Lightning 98-78 and the Stirling Senators beating the Willetton Tigers 89-85.

Then on Saturday night, the Geraldton Buccaneers beat the Perry Lakes Hawks 88-70, the South West Slammers defeated the Mandurah Magic 87-71, the Cockburn Cougars prevailed over the Lakeside Lightning 91-78, the Perth Redbacks won over the Goldfields Giants 91-83 and the East Perth Eagles defeated the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 107-90.

And on Monday night, the Stirling Senators beat the Perry Lakes Hawks for the second time this season, winning 80-69 at Warwick Stadium.

The SBL commemorated ANZAC Day with the two matches on Tuesday starting at Wally Hagan Stadium with the Cougars hosting the Flames.

Cockburn was coming off a solid road win over the Lakeside Lightning on Saturday night while Rockingham battled hard but ultimately lost to the Geraldton Buccaneers by six points on Sunday.

Precious little separated the two teams through the afternoon on Tuesday as well but it was the inside presence of Jalen Billups and the experience of the defending champion Cougars that saw them home by seven points in the finish.

The win improves the Cougars to a 5-3 record on the season while the Flames slip to 2-5 with the defeat.

Billups finished with 27 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots for Cockburn shooting 11-of-20 from the field, 2-of-3 from three-point range and just 3-of-10 at the foul line.

Dan Thomas scored 12 points and had four rebounds and four assists off the bench for the Cougars while Gavin Field added 11 points (nine rebounds, five assists, two blocks), Lochlan Cummings 11 (six boards), Seva Chan 10 and Rhett Della eight.

Ryan Godfrey had a monster game for the Flames finishing the afternoon with 33 points, six assists, three steals and two rebounds.

Big man Donovan Jack also had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Rockingham while Vinnie Zollo had eight points and 15 boards, and Jarryd Griffin seven points and eight rebounds.

Then at Ray Owen Sports Centre, the Eastern Suns were attempting to erase the memories of last year's 81-point ANZAC Day loss to Willetton.

The Suns had high hopes too having won their previous three matches before going down to the East Perth Eagles on Saturday night.

The Tigers were also looking to bounce back from a loss at home to the Stirling Senators on Friday night and couldn’t have possibly started the clash in more dominant fashion.

It looked like it could be another similar result to 12 months ago early on with Willetton completely dominant racing to a 35-10 lead by quarter-time.

By early on in the second quarter that had become 42-12 and it had embarrassment for Kalamunda on its home floor written all over it.

While the Suns never threatened to win the game from that point, they did manage to stem the tide. From the moment the Tigers led 42-12, the Eastern Suns outscored them 67-61 the rest of the way.

That didn’t deny the Tigers an emphatic victory, though, with them still winning by 24 points to improve to a 6-2 record on the season.

The Eastern Suns have now slipped to 3-7 with the two losses this weekend.

Jay Bowie proved unstoppable especially early for Willetton and ended the afternoon with 31 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals on the back of shooting 12-of-17 from the field, a perfect 4-of-4 from deep and 3-of-3 at the foul line.

Ray Turner had a significant impact in setting up the big lead and had 23 points and 16 rebounds by the end of the game.

Hayden Noordhoek finished with 16 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench for the Tigers as well with Damien Scott contributing 14 points, seven boards and five assists, and Kyle Armour seven points, four rebounds and three assists.

Courtney Belger top-scored for the Eastern Suns with 20 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists.

Kerrod Horn added 15 points and eight boards for the Suns with Nathan Drown contributing 18 points and five rebounds, and Brighton Pass 10 points.
