Week 6 Monday night Women's SBL Results

THE Perry Lakes Hawks remain undefeated in the Women's SBL and the only team to defeat the Stirling Senators in 2017 after a 79-62 victory at Warwick Stadium on Monday night.

The Senators and Hawks did battle in what will now become an annual ANZAC Day event with the Overwatch Australia Courage Cup on the line.

A packed crowd at Warwick Stadium turned out for the occasion creating a tremendous atmosphere and the Women's contest was terrific between two teams who undoubtedly appear championship contenders.

In the end, the Perry Lakes Hawks pulled away for the 79-62 victory.

That came after Week 6 began back on Friday night with the Lakeside Lightning defeating the Joondalup Wolves 81-71 and the Stirling Senators beating the Willetton Tigers 68-65.

Then on Saturday night, the Mandurah Magic remained undefeated beating the South West Slammers 86-55 with the Cockburn Cougars beating the Lakeside Lightning 81-78 and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns downing the East Perth Eagles 79-72.

Week 6 Women's SBL Preview

With the Lady Hawks having won their opening five games and the Senators on a five-match winning streak since opening the season with a defeat to Perry Lakes, all was set up for a tremendous contest.

It didn’t disappoint either and the first half in particular was an intense and up-tempo contest that was enough to show that these two clubs could at least be semi finalists in 2017.

The Lady Hawks managed to lead by three points at quarter-time and five at the half, but the Senators were doing well to stay in touch and the game was on the line at the main break.

But Perry Lakes got on top and throughout the second half pulled away to end up recording the 17-point victory to improve to 6-0 on the season.

The Hawks were again without Toni Edmondson but fellow international star Nat Burton was tremendous with 18 points and nine rebounds on 8-of-15 shooting from the field.

She had plenty of support too with Sarah Donovan finishing with 12 points and seven rebounds and Mia Satie 10 points and five boards.

Gabby O'Sullivan was dynamic ending the game with 15 points while Janique Kautsky did well contributing 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. But more importantly she did an outstanding job defensively to restrict Stirling's MVP candidate Kisha Lee to just seven points and seven rebounds.

Hawks coach Deanna Smith couldn’t be happier with the continued strong performances of her team particularly to overrun the opposition continually in the second halves.

"Our team have done a lot of work in the pre-season on their fitness and traditionally our third and fourth quarters have been really strong for us. We do the hard work at the start and then in the third and fourth quarters we are hoping to extend our leads," Smith said.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game and obviously they are improving each week, but I think for us we are also improving each week so it was always going to be a good match up for us to see where we were at.

"We also didn’t have Toni because she was away getting married but it was great for all our girls to have the opportunity to step up. Janique Kautsky for us was amazing defensively on Lee. She had the big job and it was a hell of a job she did.

"Then seeing all the girls being so much more aggressive and attacking is what I'm looking for from them, but it was set up by our defence. They scored way too many points in the first half for us but in the second half to keep a team like that to 23 points was a fantastic defensive effort. That's what I'm asking for from my girls."

Amber Land ended up top-scoring for the Senators with 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

Jasmine Martin contributed 13 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Senators and Taylor Roberts nine points and three boards.

Week 6 of the Women's SBL will conclude on ANZAC Day with two huge fixtures pitting the Kalamunda Eastern Suns up against the Willetton Tigers and the Cockburn Cougars playing the Rockingham Flames.
