Week 6 Saturday night Women's SBL Results

THE Cockburn Cougars and Kalamunda Eastern Suns both recorded their first victories of the Women's SBL season on Saturday night while the Mandurah Magic maintained their undefeated record.

Week 6 of the Women's SBL began on Friday night with the Lakeside Lightning beating the Joondalup Wolves 81-71 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium and the Stirling Senators defeating the Willetton Tigers 68-65 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

Then on Saturday night, the Mandurah Magic remained undefeated with an 86-55 victory over the South West Slammers at Eaton Recreation Centre.

The Cockburn Cougars recorded their first win of 2017 beating the Lakeside Lightning 81-78 at Lakeside Recreation Centre before the Kalamunda Eastern Suns opened their account for the season downing the East Perth Eagles 79-72 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

The Lightning entered the clash with the Cougars on a high after beating the Joondalup Wolves impressively on Friday, but Cockburn was desperate to record its first win of 2017.

It was a thrilling contest at Lakeside Recreation Centre but in the end it was the Cougars holding on for the three-point win to open their account for the season.

Kersten Mitchell was tremendous for the Cougars finishing the night with 29 points, 12 rebounds and three assists on the back of shooting 12-of-20 from the field.

New import Lindsey Doucette also had 20 points and 10 rebounds in her second game with Cockburn while Brianna Moyes finished with 17 points, seven boards and two assists.

Lakeside couldn’t quite back up its big win 24 hours earlier but reigning MVP Ali Schwagmeyer had another strong game with 26 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Fellow import Sydnee Fipps added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Lightning with Paris Duffield contributing 13 points and Alecia Knowles 10.

The Magic continued their dominant and impressive opening to the 2017 season beating the Slammers by 31 points at Eaton Recreation Centre.

It was a dominant performance by the undefeated Mandurah with Carly Boag ending up top-scoring with 19 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Casey Mihovilovich added 18 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists for the Magic while Nici Gilday contributed 13 points, four assists and three boards, Bree Klasztorny seven points and five rebounds, and Emma Klasztorny seven points and six boards.

Courtney Bayliss did all she could for the Slammers with 20 points and 13 rebounds while Brittany Hodges contributed 13 points and eight boards, and Georgia Denehey 14 points and four steals.

The Eastern Suns were the other team to break their duck in 2017 on Saturday night beating the Eagles by seven points at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

Rebecca Motroni top-scored for the Suns with 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Melissa Moyle also had 15 points, five assists and four rebounds for Kalamunda while Tahlia Fejo contributed 12 points, five assists and three steals, Jennie Rintala 12 points and 12 boards, and Hannah King 10 points.

Kaylee Kilpatrick top-scored for East Perth finishing the night with 18 points, five assists, five rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.

Jodee Sontay added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles, Nadia Parora 11 points and four boards, and Eryn Fisher 10 points.

Week 6 will continue on Monday night with the Stirling Senators taking on the Perry Lakes Hawks at Warwick Stadium.

And on ANZAC Day, the Kalamunda Eastern Suns host the Willetton Tigers and the Cockburn Cougars take on the Rockingham Flames.
