Week 6 Saturday night Men's SBL results

THE Geraldton Buccaneers, South West Slammers, Cockburn Cougars, Perth Redbacks and East Perth Eagles all recorded Men's SBL victories as part of Week 6 action on Saturday night.

The Buccs won impressively on the road to start their double-header while the Slammers made it two straight wins, the Cougars handed the Lakeside Lightning a second loss inside 24 hours, the Redbacks won in Kalgoorlie and the Eagles ended the Kalamunda Eastern Suns' three-game winning run.

Week 6 began on Friday night with the Joondalup Wolves defeating the Lakeside Lightning 98-78 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium and the Stirling Senators downing the Willetton Tigers 89-85 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

The Saturday night results then saw the Geraldton Buccaneers down the Perry Lakes Hawks 88-70, the South West Slammers beat the Mandurah Magic 87-71 and the Cockburn Cougars defeat the Lakeside Lightning 91-78.

The Perth Redbacks also hit the road to defeat the Goldfields Giants 91-83 and the East Perth Eagles defeated the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 107-90.

There were five big games in the Men's SBL on Saturday beginning at Bendat Basketball Centre with the Buccaneers winning impressively over the Hawks by 18 points.

Geraldton started strongly but only led by two points at half-time. They extended that to seven by three quarter-time, however, and then 18 by the final buzzer to improve to a 5-1 record on the season.

Jackson Hussey finished with 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Buccs while Mo Barrow added 23 points, six boards, two assists and two steals.

Matthew Hancock contributed 14 points and four steals as well for Geraldton while Aaron Ralph had 11 points, five boards and three steals, and Dwayne Benjamin just the seven points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals on 2-of-13 shooting.

It was a tough night for the Hawks with Ryan Smith top-scoring with 17 points to go with eight rebounds and six assists.

Robert Waters added 13 points to go with six assists, four rebounds and two steals also for Perry Lakes while Matthew Adekponya had 12 points, five boards, three blocked shots and three assists in his first game against the team he played with last season.

The Lightning returned home to Lakeside Recreation Centre to host the Cougars following their loss to the Wolves on Friday night. Things didn’t get much better for the home team with Cockburn coming away with the 13-point win.

Jalen Billups again top-scored for the Cougars finishing the night with 20 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots after a tremendous battle with Lakeside captain James Padgett.

Gavin Field also finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Cockburn while Lochlan Cummings added 10 points, three boards and three assists, Jaarod Holmes 10 points, Jake Harris eight and Steven Van Lit eight.

Lakeside was again without Daniel Grida and Darrell Morgan with Padgett doing all he could ending up with 25 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots.

Andrew Ferguson had an improved game for the Lightning with 13 points and eight rebounds while Devon Atkinson contributed 12 points, eight assists and four boards. Matt Vinci also had 10 points for Lakeside and Corey Shervill eight.

After breaking through for their first win of the season last Thursday night against Rockingham, South West made it consecutive victories beating the Magic by 16 points at Eaton Recreation Centre in their most comprehensive performance of 2017.

Tre Nichols starred for the Slammers with 30 points, three rebounds and two assists while shooting 10-of-18 from the field and 4-of-9 from three-point territory, but he had plenty of support.

Brian Voelkel flirted with a triple-double again finishing with 15 points, 14 rebounds, nine assists and three steals while Clive Weeden had 13 points and seven boards for the Slammers, Teny Puot 11 points and three assists, and Chris Douglas nine points.

Ricky Kreklow top-scored for the Magic with 19 points while Will McNeill contributed 17 points and seven rebounds, Taylor Mullenax 11 points and five boards, and Chad Simpson nine points and four rebounds.

In desperate search of their second win of the season, the Giants stuck with the Redbacks for the first three quarters at Neils Hansen Basketball Stadium.

But coming off its first loss of 2017, Perth pulled away in the fourth quarter with 27 points to 18 to win by eight and improve to a 6-1 record on the season.

Shawn Redhage once again led the way for the Redbacks finishing the night with 30 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Ben Smith might have shot just 6-of-17 from the floor and 4-of-12 from downtown but had 22 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for Perth.

Geordie Murray added 13 points off the bench while Joel Wagner contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Goldfields captain Jacob Holmen top-scored with 27 points, 15 rebounds and five assists with Miles Tierney contributing 14 points, JB Pillard 11 (14 rebounds, three assists, three steals, two blocks) and Luke Pike 10 (five boards).

The Eastern Suns then came into their clash with the Eagles at Ray Owen Sports Centre on a three-game winning streak, but East Perth proved too strong winning by 17 points.

That saw the Eagles improve to a 5-3 record on the season on the back of a big night from captain Drew Williamson who delivered 29 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals on 11-of-15 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from downtown.

Kevin Davis added another 24 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots for East Perth with Mason Bragg contributing 16 points and seven assists, Dennis Tawhiti nine points, Ngor Manyang nine and Joe-Alan Tupaea nine to go with six rebounds and three assists.

Courtney Belger had a big night for the Eastern Suns with 32 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Kerrod Horn added 12 points for Kalamunda, Brighton Pass 10 and Ryan Blanchett 10.

Week 6 action continues on Sunday with the Rockingham Flames hosting the Geraldton Buccaneers from noon.

On Monday night, the Stirling Senators host the Perry Lakes Hawks as Week 6 continues at Warwick Stadium.

And on ANZAC Day, the Kalamunda Eastern Suns host the Willetton Tigers and the Cockburn Cougars take on the Rockingham Flames.
