Week 6 Women's SBL Preview

EIGHT games spread over four days is shapes as a defining Week 6 in the Women's SBL with the fixtures including a testing double for the Stirling Senators against the Willetton Tigers and Perry Lakes in what should be two fascinating contests.

The ANZAC Round in the SBL begins with two games on Friday night with the Joondalup Wolves playing the Lakeside Lightning and the Willetton Tigers locking horns with the Stirling Senators.

There are then three matches on Saturday night with the South West Slammers playing the Mandurah Magic, the Lakeside Lightning taking on the Cockburn Cougars and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns facing the East Perth Eagles.

There is the one match on Monday night on ANZAC Day eve with the Stirling Senators hosting the Perry Lakes Hawks at Warwick Stadium.

Then on ANZAC Day itself, the Kalamunda Eastern Suns play the Willetton Tigers and the Cockburn Cougars take on the Rockingham Flames.

Week 5 Thursday night Women's SBL Results

Every match has plenty at stake in Week 6 of the Women's SBL, but the teams that face double-headers across the four days could learn plenty about where they sit in the competition in 2017.

The Senators can make a real statement of their championship credentials if they can win their double.

It starts up against the defending champion Tigers at Willetton Basketball Stadium on Friday and concludes against the undefeated Lady Hawks on Monday night at Warwick Stadium.

With Kisha Lee proving a dominant presence in the SBL and a definite MVP candidate and with Amber Land still producing impressive performances, Jasmine Martin doing well as point guard and some good other role players doing their thing, the Senators are looking impressive.

Since an opening round loss to Perry Lakes at Bendat Basketball Centre, they have since defeated Rockingham, Cockburn, South West and Kalamunda to enter this weekend with an impressive 4-1 record.

The Tigers might still be understrength at least without Kate Malpass and yet to arrive Jessica Hootmann, but they still found a way to win last Thursday night over East Perth so they will provide a good test for the Senators.

Monday night then should be an outstanding contest and if Stirling is able to hand Perry Lakes its first loss of 2017, coach Glenn Clarke is once again back in familiar territory in charge of a championship contender in the Women's SBL.

The Tigers, too, have a double-header starting with that clash with the Senators before then taking on the winless Eastern Suns on ANZAC Day at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

The Lightning are another team with a double-header this weekend beginning on Friday night with a stern test up against the Wolves at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

The Lady Wolfpack suffered their first loss of the season last Thursday at the hands of the Perth Redbacks so they will be out for revenge, while Lakeside is also coming off a 23-point defeat at the hands of Perry Lakes.

But the Lightning have started the season well with a 3-2 record and with reigning MVP Ali Schwagmeyer and new import Sydnee Fipps, they have two genuine stars with Ash Grant still to return.

It is a significant challenge for the Lightning up against the Lady Wolfpack on Friday particularly with them coming off a loss.

But they will look to make their mark on last year's grand finalists and minor premiers before then hosting the winless Cockburn Cougars at Lakeside Recreation Centre on Saturday.

Cockburn simply has too much talent to remain winless too much longer with Brianna Moyes, Kersten Mitchell, Steph Jones, Lindsey Doucette, Isabelle Miotti, Talisia Bourne and others. But Lakeside won't be wanting to be the team to give them that first win of 2017.

The Cougars have two chances of getting that first win of the season then hosting the Rockingham Flames at Wally Hagan Stadium on ANZAC Day.

The Eastern Suns are the other winless team remaining in the Women's SBL and have two chances for that first win this weekend. The first comes on Saturday night against East Perth and then on ANZAC Day against Willetton.

Both games are at Ray Owen Sports Centre with the Suns still awaiting Devanny King to be cleared to play for the first time in 2017 after playing with the Lightning in 2016.

The Slammers and Magic are two teams with just the one game to play in Week 6 as they lock horns at Eaton Recreation Centre on Saturday night.
