Week 5 Thursday night Women's SBL Results

THE monster night on Thursday in the Women's SBL saw victories to the Willetton Tigers, Perry Lakes Hawks, Mandurah Magic, Perth Redbacks, Rockingham Flames and Stirling Senators.

The night's action saw the Lady Hawks and Magic remain undefeated so far in the 2017 season after five rounds with the Redbacks handing the Joondalup Wolves their first loss and the Cockburn Cougars and Kalamunda Eastern Suns remaining winless.

The Thursday night results saw the Willetton Tigers defeat the East Perth Eagles 75-67, the Perry Lakes Hawks down the Lakeside Lightning 81-58 and the Mandurah Magic prevail 85-61 over the Cockburn Cougars.

The Perth Redbacks also defeated the Joondalup Wolves 87-80 while the Rockingham Flames beat the South West Slammers 72-64 and the Stirling Senators downed the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 81-64.

The Tigers took on the Eagles at Willetton Basketball Stadium with the defending champions coming away with the hard fought eight-point victory having come from behind at three quarter-time to do so.

Willetton was missing several key players including Stacey Barr, Kate Malpass, Zoe Harper and Jessica Hootmann, but found a way to win with Desiree Kelley leading the way with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Emma Lobb added 12 points and six boards for the Tigers, Lara Napier 11 points and 10 assists, Emma Gandini 10 points and Sophie Maines nine and five rebounds.

Haylee DeSousa ended up top-scoring for East Perth with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Jodee Sontay added 15 points, nine boards and four assists for the Eagles, Eryn Fisher 13 points, five rebounds and three assists, and Akim Lual eight points.

The Lady Hawks continued their impressive start to life with Deanna Smith as coach remaining undefeated this season beating the Lightning by 23 points at Bendat Basketball Centre.

Perry Lakes set up the win in the first half leading 48-20 at half-time.

Nat Burton top-scored for the Hawks with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Lauren Jeffers contributed 13 points and Sarah Donovan 12 to go with five boards.

Danika Pisconeri also had 13 points off the bench with Toni Edmondson missing for Perry Lakes.

Reigning MVP Ali Schwagmeyer top-scored for the Lightning with 18 points and six rebounds while Sydnee Fipps contributed 13 points, four rebounds and two assists.

The winless Cougars then hosted the undefeated Magic and the contest followed the same script with Mandurah beating Cockburn by 24 points at Wally Hagan Stadium.

The Magic have now won their opening four matches of the season while the Cougars have lost their first five.

NBL championship-winner Cary Boag led the way for Mandurah finishing the night with 23 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Reigning Player of the Week Nici Gilday also finished with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists with Casey Mihovilovich adding 13 points, seven assists and three boards.

Rachel Halleen also had 12 points and five assists for the Magic with Rachel Pettit adding nine points off the bench.

New Cougars import Lindsey Doucette top-scored in her first appearance with 17 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Brianna Moyes added 17 points, nine rebounds and two assists for Cockburn and Kersten Mitchell 14 points and six boards.

The Redbacks continued to build some momentum winning a third straight match and handing the Wolves their first defeat of 2017.

Perth won by seven points at Joondalup Basketball Stadium in an impressive performance.

Emilee Harmon put in a remarkably dominant display for the Redbacks with the import finishing with 36 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists on shooting 15-of-24 from the field and 6-of-6 from the line.

Ajay Johnson added 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Perth, Rebecca Benson 16 points, four boards and three assists, and Jess Jakens eight points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Wolfpack were again coached by Michelle Swain in the absence of Craig Friday, and without some key players including Klara Wischer, they had two dominant performers.

Chelsea Belcher finished with 34 points, six rebounds and four steals with Nikita Martin contributing 26 points and eight rebounds.

But only seven Wolves players the court and of those Chloe Ferguson played less than two minutes.

The Flames made a fast start at Mike Barnett Sports Complex to lead the Slammers by nine points at quarter-time and to go on and win by eight points.

It was Rockingham's second win of 2017 and once again it was Jacinta Bourne playing the starring role with 17 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Ash Sidebottom contributed 13 points and five rebounds off the bench for the Flames with Ella Kennedy adding 12 points, seven boards and three steals, Chelsea Armstrong 11 points and five rebounds, and Dena English seven points against her former team.

The Slammers slipped to 2-3 on the season despite another 20 points and 11 rebounds from Brittany Hodges.

Courtney Bayliss also had 13 points and 12 boards for South West with Tori Dugan contributing 10 points and five rebounds.

The Senators continued their strong start to the 2017 season improving to a 4-1 record with a 17-point win over the winless Eastern Suns at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

Stirling held Kalamunda to just 24 second half points scoring 45 themselves for a fourth straight victory since an opening night loss to Perry Lakes.

Kisha Lee continued her stunning start to her SBL career with another 31 points and nine rebounds for the Senators shooting 14-of-23 from the floor.

Amber Land added 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for Stirling, Jasmine Martin 14 points, eight boards and five assists, and Hannah Throns eight points, five rebounds and four steals.

Jennie Rintala did all she could for the Eastern Suns with 27 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Melissa Moyle also had 13 points and nine rebounds for Kalamunda and Rachel Brooke 10 points, seven boards, four assists and two steals.
