Week 5 Women's SBL Preview

THERE are six games in the Women's SBL in Week 5 and all take place on a monster Thursday night ahead of the Easter Break.

There are some fascinating contests thrown in among the six contests as well with the Perry Lakes Hawks, Joondalup Wolves and Mandurah Magic all attempting to stay undefeated against dangerous opponents.

Then there are the Cockburn Cougars and Kalamunda Eastern Suns looking for their first wins of 2017 and that's just the start of what should make it a fascinating night.

Each of the six matches will tip-off at 6.30pm across the various venues.

The Perry Lakes Hawks face the Lakeside Lightning, the Joondalup Wolves take on the Perth Redbacks, the Rockingham Flames host the South West Slammers, the Kalamunda Eastern Suns battle the Stirling Senators, the Cockburn Cougars play the Mandurah Magic and the Willetton Tigers play the East Perth Eagles.

The Lady Hawks have opened the season in tremendous form under the coaching of Deanna Smith to remain undefeated after four games.

But the Lightning have shown good signs too winning three of their four games setting up a terrific contest at Bendat Basketball Centre.

The Lady Wolfpack are another undefeated team so far in 2017 as well after three games, but they will face a real test against a Redbacks team now finding their feet.

With Emilee Harmon settling in alongside Ajay Johnson, Rebecca Benson, Gabby Clayton, Jess Jakens, Lisa Wallbutton and company, the Redbacks have won their past two games and will be looking to make a statement against the Wolves at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

The Flames and Slammers clash at Mike Barnett Sports Complex. Rockingham is in unfamiliar territory with one win from four games to date and have played all of that without a restricted player.

Jacinta Bourne has done all she can but she needs some more help if the Flames are to get over the Slammers. They did lose to the Stirling Senators on Sunday, but with Brittany Hodges inside they are a threat.

It will also be worth watching out for Dena English playing her first game for the Flames against the Slammers.

The Eastern Suns are still chasing their first win of the season under new coach Tom Knowles. They have yet to be able to suit up Devanny King either awaiting her clearance so they will be hoping that changes before long.

They face a big challenge against the Senators at Ray Owen Sports Centre with Stirling having won its last three games with Kisha Lee, Amber Land and Jasmine Martin proving a potent trio.

Senators coach Glenn Clarke is hoping his team can keep the momentum going to make sure it's an enjoyable Easter.

"Hopefully we'll get another win and just keep our momentum going. The momentum is the main thing, it really is. We have to keep our momentum running especially when some teams haven’t got some imports arriving just yet," Clarke said.

"It always takes time to get that momentum going and we have that at the moment. That can get you over the line in a lot of games and if I get the win on Thursday I'll be stoked over Easter."

The Cougars are another team looking for their first win of 2017 even though coach John Triscari has got some good performances out of new arrivals Kersten Mitchell, BJ Moyes and Steph Jones this season.

It doesn’t get any easier for them despite being at home at Wally Hagan Stadium on Thursday night with the undefeated Magic as the opponents.

Mandurah has won its first three games and with Player of the Week Nici Gilday coming off 33 points with Casey Mihovilovich and Carly Boag among her supporting cast, it's a big job ahead of the Cougars.

Then there is the defending champion Tigers hosting the Eagles at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

Coming off last year's championship, Willetton has won just one of three games this season and just can't get its full line-up on the court. Again Kate Malpass won't be there on Thursday but Stacey Barr will look to put the team on his back.

The challenge ahead of them is an improved Eagles team looking for their second win of the season with their two imports to suit up any game now.
