Week 4 Sunday Women's SBL Results

IT was a long wait until Sunday afternoon for the Stirling Senators and South West Slammers to play in Week 4 of the Women's SBL but after a slow start the Senators warmed up and again led by Kisha Lee recorded a 19-point victory at Warwick Stadium.

Week 4 of the Women's SBL began on Friday night with the Perth Redbacks beating the East Perth Eagles 72-56, the Perry Lakes Hawks defeating the Willetton Tigers 81-79, the Mandurah Magic downing the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 91-57 and the Lakeside Lightning prevailing over the Rockingham Flames 81-62.

In the lone game on Saturday night, the Joondalup Wolves defeated the East Perth Eagles 80-62.

It was then on to the final game of the round at Warwick Stadium on Sunday and it ended up with the Stirling Senators defeating the South West Slammers 76-57.

The Sunday afternoon contest got off to a sloppy start but the Slammers did have the better of the opening quarter holding the Senators to 10 points to lead by seven at quarter-time.

Stirling began to settle in the second period and scored 24 points to 10 to take a 34-27 advantage into half-time.

The Senators then pulled away throughout the second half with Kisha Lee knocking down big shots, Amber Land working hard inside, Jasmine Martin doing a bit of everything and some of the younger players delivering impressive cameos.

The Slammers never gave up and some of the interior passing from Kate Fielding to find Brittany Hodges was a delight to watch, but in the end the Senators went on to win by 19 points and to be really building some nice momentum this season.

Lee had another strong performance for Stirling finishing with 21 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

Martin celebrated her birthday with a good all-round showing too with nine points, six rebounds and five assists while Land finished with eight points, 10 boards, four assists and two steals.

Rebekah Throns came up big for the Senators with 15 points as well shooting 6-of-9 from the floor while Maddison Hooper contributed nine points and five rebounds.

The Slammers fought hard but had only seven players who played 13 minutes or more and one of those Georgia Denehey went off injured during the third quarter leaving coach Peter Harper short on his rotation.

Hodges showed that she is going to be a real force as the season rolls on finishing with 25 points, 15 rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals for the Slammers.

Denehey had 10 points before her injury with Tori Dugan finishing with six points and four assists and Fielding six points, four rebounds and three assists.

It might have been a bit of a scrappy start, but Senators coach Glenn Clarke knew things would click for his group at some stage and he couldn’t be happier with how they are travelling a month into the season.

"It was the old Sunday-it is. In that first quarter, me and Donna (Cuperus) were pulling our hair out, but we know what they can do," Clarke said.

"In the last three weeks they've shot a lot of points, they can make the open shots and they can find Kisha and Amber inside. Now it's just a matter of waiting until it clicks. It might take until the third quarter if it's a really game but we know it will come for us sooner or later.

"The girls all play as the one unit, they all contribute and we are getting three, almost four double-points scorers each game now so that's good. They are just an enjoyable bunch to coach and they all get along with each other, they all know their roles and they are just out there to play and have fun."
