Week 1 Friday night women's SBL results

THE East Perth Eagles, Rockingham Flames and Perry Lakes Hawks all opened the 2017 Women's SBL season with home victories on Friday night.

The 2017 season tipped on Friday night with the East Perth Eagles beating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 75-53 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre, the Rockingham Flames beating the Perth Redbacks 95-80 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex and the Perry Lakes Hawks downing the Stirling Senators 77-62 at Bendat Basketball Centre.

East Perth showed it could be a big improver in 2017 with its 22-point win at Morley over Kalamunda with the Eagles still awaiting the arrival of Abbey Duinker and Kaylee Kilpatrick.

The Eagles dominated the Suns after quarter-time outscoring them 56-36 to win by 19.

Jodee Sontay finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds for East Perth with Nicole Jorre St Jorre adding 19 points, six boards and three assists.

Haylee DeSousa also had 11 points for the Eagles and Amy Chinnery 10 to go with six rebounds.

Rachel Brooks top-scored off the bench for the Eastern Suns with 15 points. Tahlia Fejo added 10 points, five assists and four assists. But the Suns were without restricted players Devanny King and Jennie Rintala.

Rockingham's era post Sami Whitcomb and Darcee Garbin got off to an impressive start with the Flames beating the Redbacks by 15 points in a high-scoring shootout.

Ariana Hetherington showed she is ready to go to the next level in 2017 with the increased responsibility with 25 points and 11 rebounds in the best game of her career.

Dena English (19 points, five assists, four rebounds) and Chelsea Armstrong (13 points, four assists, four boards) both showed they will be good signings for the Flames too.

Jacinta Bourne could also go to the next level. She had 16 points, eight rebounds, eight steals and seven assists. Ella Kennedy added 10 points also for Rockingham.

Emilee Harmon couldn’t have done much more on debut for the Redbacks ending the night with 30 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Rebecca Benson contributed 24 points, four rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots with Ajay Jones also adding 11 points, nine boards and four assists.

Deanna Smith's move into the non-playing coaching role with the Lady Hawks made a perfect start as well with Perry Lakes winning its home opener over the Senators by 15 points.

It was a solid and good all-round showing by Perry Lakes with Nat Burton marking her return to the Hawks with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Toni Edmondson added 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Lady Hawks while Sarah Donovan contributed 13 points and eight boards, Kate Anthony 10 points and Lauren Jeffers nine along with five assists.

Jasmine Martin had a big outing for the Senators with 29 points. Kisha Lee added 16 points and 13 rebounds. But the two imports did combine for 14 turnovers.

The opening round of the 2017 season will conclude on Saturday night with the Joondalup Wolves playing the Cockburn Cougars, South West Slammers taking on the Lakeside Lightning and Willetton Tigers facing the Mandurah Magic.
