Wroe's Restricted Status Lifted

Perth Wildcats development player Corban Wroe received the call up for a significant minutes increase in the NBL this season after star players Damian Martin and Jarrod Kenny succumbed to serious injuries early in the season.

Wroe did not receive any court time for the Wildcats in the first three rounds of this NBL season before finding himself playing 29 minutes against the Illawarra Hawks in round four.

Wroe went on to then play 22 minutes in round five and 33 minutes in round six before missing round seven with injury.

With Kenny returning to the side, Wroe’s minutes decreased significantly averaging 7.14 minutes upon his return between rounds 8 and 14.

Due to the significant increase in minutes following the Wildcats injury list, Wroe’s minute’s average between round 1 and 14 was above the 25% allowed by the SBL’s Restricted Player Policy which deemed him restricted for the 2017 SBL season.

With plans to sign Corban Wroe for the upcoming SBL season, the Stirling Senators exercised their right appealed to the SBL Commission for a dispensation regarding his restricted status.

The SBL Commission undertook a complete review of Corban’s minutes this NBL season and found the calculations flawed, with a healthy Corban Wroe not given any court time five times during rounds 1 to 14.

In the list supplied by Basketball Australia, games when a player does not hit the court are not calculated into the minute’s average.

“No Commissioner opposed that it was necessary to include games Corban was up for selection on and was not included in the side” stated SBL Chief Commissioner Andy Stewart.

“To not include those five games is not logical, by excluding the zero minute games; it distorts the average of minutes” he said.

With Wroe’s restricted status lifted, the Stirling Senators will breathe a sigh of relief with one restricted position already taken with Illawarra Hawks player, Cody Ellis expected to return.

It is understood the Senators will look to add an import to their roster to take up the remaining restricted position made vacant by the successful appeal.
