Week 16 Men's SBL Wrap

A FASCINATING Week 16 in the Men's SBL saw the Cockburn Cougars, Joondalup Wolves and Willetton Tigers keep winning as the top three teams while the Perry Lakes Hawks and East Perth Eagles continue to fight over eighth spot, and the Goldfields Giants ended their losing run.

The two matches on Friday night saw the Bethanie Stirling Senators defeat the Perry Lakes Hawks 90-85 and the Texture WA Perth Redbacks beat the Mandurah Magic 111-87.

Then on Saturday night, the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants ended their losing run beating the Lakeside Lightning 99-87 at Kambalda Recreation Centre while the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers defeated the S&K Electrical Geraldton Buccaneers 107-96 at Active West Stadium.

Also on Saturday, the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles beat the Bethanie Stirling Senators 102-98, the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars downed the Nags Head Tavern & Bistro Rockingham Flames 130-122 and the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves thumped the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 139-71.

Lastly on Sunday, the Perry Lakes Hawks beat the Print Sync South West Slammers 111-89 and the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves beat the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 89-69.

Following Week 16 of the Men's SBL, the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars remain on top of the standings with a 17-3 record just ahead over the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves (17-4).

The Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers (15-6) remain third ahead of the Bethanie Stirling Senators (15-7), S&K Electrical Geraldton Buccaneers (14-8), Texture WA Perth Redbacks (12-8) and Nags Head Tavern & Bistro Rockingham Flames (12-9).

The Perry Lakes Hawks (9-13) and Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles (9-13) are locked in a battle over eighth spot with the Silver Lake Resources (7-14) still an outside chance ahead of the Print Sync South West Slammers (6-14), Mandurah Magic (5-15), Lakeside Lightning (4-16) and Kalamunda Eastern Suns (4-16).

There were plenty of players to have standout weekends starting on Friday night with the Senators beating the Hawks by five points with Cody Ellis top-scoring with 21 points, five assists, four steals and four rebounds.

Kyle Lindbergh added 19 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots, Tom Witts 18 points, five boards and three assists, and Austin Bruton 13 points.

Ryan Smith top-scored for the Hawks with 21 points and nine rebounds and Jordan Hickert 17 points and five boards in just 19 minutes before going down injured. Brian Carlwell added 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Bryton Hobbs 12 points and six boards.

The Redbacks ended up with a strong 24-point win over the Magic despite being without Michael Vigor and Joel Wagner, and with Jourdan DeMuynck and Reed McConnell hobbled during the night.

Lewis Thomas had a career-night for Perth with 40 points, 16 rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists as did Simon Lokan with 23 points and 13 rebounds.

Ben Smith added 16 points and four assists for the Redbacks and McConnell 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Trevor Setty top-scored for Mandurah with 25 points and 10 rebounds with Ben Smith adding 15 points and 15 boards, and Tom Remmerswaal 12 points.

Then on Saturday, the Eagles scored an important win over the Senators with Tom Jervis leading the way with 29 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

Rhys Vague added 21 points and eight rebounds for East Perth, Sunday Dech 14 points, 14 boards, nine assists, four steals and two blocks, Nikola Donlagic 13 points and Aiden Murphy 10.

Cody Ellis did all he could for Stirling with 41 points and six rebounds with Austin Bruton adding 20 points and Kyle Lindbergh 11.

The Cougars won a high-scoring battle over the Flames by eight points with Marcus Goode again reinforcing his MVP credentials with another 40 points, 21 rebounds and three assists.

Julian Pesava added 27 points, 12 rebounds and five steals for Cockburn, Rhett Della 25 points and 11 boards and Daniel Thomas 22 points and nine assists in the absence of Gavin Field.

Cooper Land put up 30 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists for the Flames with Taylor Land contributing 25 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds, Ryan Godfrey 20 points, Jarryd Griffin 18 points and eight boards, and Justin Beard 15 points.

The defending champion Wolves made a real statement beating the Eastern Suns by 68 points with Rob Huntington top-scoring with 31 points while Kevin Davis added 22, Trian Iliadis 15, Seb Salinas 14, Jordan Wellsteed 12, Rhys Smyth 11 and Damian Matacz 10.

Courtney Belger top-scored with 19 points for Kalamunda with Ryan Blanchett contributing 14 points.

The Giants snapped their losing run beating the Lightning by 12 points at home with Lakeside having now lost 13 straight.

Kenny Manigault was the star for Goldfields with 32 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists and four steals with Daniel Goodluck adding 17 points, Jacob Holmen 18 (15 rebounds, six assists), Russell Hurst 12 and Ezra Nikora 11.

TJ Hallice top-scored for the Lightning with 25 points to go with 10 rebounds while Daniel Alexander had 23 points, 14 boards, five assists and four blocked shots.

The Tigers hit the road and beat the Buccs in Geraldton with Kyle Armour leading from the front as captain with 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Damien Scott contributed 24 points for the Tigers, Jay Bowie 18, Nic Cody 13, Charles Funches 11 and Josh Johnson 11 (nine rebounds, six assists).

Then on Sunday, the Hawks scored a crucial win over the Slammers with Brian Carlwell finishing with 22 points and nine rebounds.

Ben Purser added 21 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists for Perry Lakes, Ben Dixon 17 points, Bryton Hobbs 16 (nine rebounds, seven assists, five steals), Josh Garlepp 10 and Ryan Smith 10.

Tre Nichols finished with 28 points for the Slammers with Corey Easley adding 15 points, Trent Worthington 12 (20 rebounds) and Wade Hitchcock 11.

The Wolfpack made it a double for the weekend beating the Eagles at home by 20 points.

Trian Iliadis top-scored for Joondalup with 17 points with Rob Huntington contributing 13, Kevin Davis 11 and Joel Questel 11.

Sunday Dech had 15 points and seven rebounds for East Perth with Andrej Donlagic contributing 13 points, Tom Jervis 13 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, and Rhys Vague 10 points, 11 boards and six assists.
