Week 13 Sunday SBL wrap

THE SBL leading Women's and Men's Joondalup Wolves teams both scored Sunday Week 13 victories over the Perry Lakes Hawks while the Lakeside Lightning and East Perth Eagles split their battles to close the weekend's action.

The two Women's matches on Sunday saw the Lakeside Lightning defeat the Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles 70-59 and the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves beat the Perry Lakes Hawks 76-61.

The Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles then won their Men's clash over the Lakeside Lightning 110-85 while the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves downed the Perry Lakes Hawks 100-82.

Starting with the Women's contests, the Lightning scored a third straight victory beating the Eagles by 11 points at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

Lakeside has improved to fifth position at 8-6 as a result while East Perth remains on the bottom of the standings at 1-14 and having lost their last nine matches.

The game was all but over at quarter-time after the Lightning scored 28 points to just seven in the fourth quarter. While the Eagles won the second half 40 to 26, it only served to cut the final margin to 11.

Lakeside pulled in 52 rebounds opposed to 35 from East Perth but the Lightning wouldn’t have been happy with 21 turnovers.

Ashleigh Grant top-scored for the Lightning with 17 points and 13 rebounds shooting 8-of-13 from the field.

Alison Schwagmeyer added 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Lightning, Devanny King 14 points, seven boards and two steals, Courtney Byrnes 10 points and eight rebounds, and Jess van Schie nine points, four assists and three rebounds.

Haylee DeSousa finished with 13 points and four rebounds for the Eagles nailing 3-of-5 from three-point range. Nicole Jorre St Jorre added nine points, five steals, four rebounds and two assists for East Perth and Elainah Coffin nine points and five boards.

The Lady Wolfpack maintained top position with a 10th straight victory beating the Hawks by 15 points at Bendat Basketball Centre.

Perry Lakes fought hard but Joondalup managed to pull marginally further away all afternoon winning each quarter on the way to the 15-point victory.

The Wolves shot 43 per cent from the field opposed to 30 per cent from the Hawks while also winning the rebound count by six and delivering 25 assists to 12.

Amy Kidner continued her outstanding form for the Wolves with 23 points and four rebounds shooting 10-of-15 from the floor.

Klara Wischer added 19 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and four steals for Joondalup shooting 8-of-15 from the field. Nikita-Lee Martin added 15 points and seven boards for the Wolfpack and Ellyce Ironmonger eight points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Kate Anthony top-scored for the Hawks with 10 points with Lauren Jeffers contributing nine points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals, Deanna Smith eight points, six rebounds and three steals, Emily Burton eight points and Brieana Nolan eight points.

And in the Men's contests, the Eagles bounced back from a narrow loss to the Cougars on Friday night by beating the Lightning by 25 points at home on Sunday afternoon.

The win keeps East Perth in the playoff hunt at 7-10 while it is a ninth straight loss for Lakeside who now sits at 4-12.

The Eagles put their foot down in the first quarter with 30 points to 17 and they went on to lead by 89-61 at three quarter-time before the Lightning scored 24 fourth quarter points to cut the final margin to 25 points.

East Perth shot 45 per cent from the field but also 45 per cent from three-point range going 15-of-33 from beyond the arc.

Drew Williamson was the main reason for that nailing 6-of-7 from three to score 33 points to go with four assists and four steals.

Rhys Vague added 20 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for the Eagles also hitting 4-of-6 from deep.

Sunday Dech contributed 16 points and 13 rebounds for East Perth, Thomas Korf 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, and Tom Jervis 10 points and seven boards.

Daniel Alexander top-scored for the Lightning with 17 points and five rebounds with Corey Shervill contributing 14 points, Matthew Vinci 14 points, Tom Parkinson 10 points and eight rebounds, and TJ Hallice nine points.

The Wolfpack maintained their hold on top position as well in the Men's SBL with a fifth straight victory beating the Hawks at Bendat Basketball Centre by 18 points.

The Wolves pulled away in the second half scoring 51 points to 37 to score the 18-point win that improves them to a 13-2 record while the Hawks slip to 8-10 with a second loss for the weekend. They remain a game clear in eighth spot.

Kevin Davis was the star of the afternoon for the Wolves finishing with 32 points, 14 rebounds and three assists hitting 9-of-19 from the floor and going 13-of-15 at the charity stripe.

Greg Hire added 22 points and seven rebounds for Joondalup, Reece Maxwell 12 points, four rebounds and three steals, and Rob Huntington 10 points, seven boards and four assists.

Ben Purser fought hard for the Hawks ending up with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists with Ben Dixon adding 15 points, Matthew Sellers 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Ryan Smith 11 points, eight boards, three assists and two stelas.
