Week 9 Friday night SBL wrap

THE Perry Lakes Hawks, Joondalup Wolves and Perth Redbacks all recorded Men's and Women's Week 9 SBL victories on Friday with the Lady Wolfpack pulling off the night's big result beating the defending champion Rockingham Flames on the road.

The three Women's matches on Friday night saw the Perry Lakes Hawks defeat the Lakeside Lightning 84-80, the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves down the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames 65-54 and the Textile WA Perth Redbacks won an overtime thriller 94-93 over the Bethanie Stirling Senators.

And in the Men's fixtures, the Perry Lakes Hawks beat the Lakeside Lightning 104-95, the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves defeat the Nags Head Tavern Rockingham Flames 125-106 and the Textile WA Perth Redbacks down the Bethanie Stirling Senators 115-86.

The most intriguing result of the night came in the Women's competition at Mike Barnett Sports Complex with the Lady Wolfpack handing the two-time defending champion Flames their second loss of the season.

Rockingham had won nine straight since losing to Willetton to start the season and on Friday Joondalup hit the road and took out an 11-point win after holding the Flames to just six second quarter points.

The Flames had an uncharacteristically poor shooting night going 22-of-75 at 29 per cent and 6-of-36 from deep at 16 per cent. The Wolves hit 39 per cent from the floor and pulled in 51 rebounds to 39 to set up the impressive win.

The win improves the Wolfpack to a 6-1 record and it was on the back of 21 points and 13 rebounds from Amy Kidner.

Klara Wischer added 11 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and two steals for the Wolves, and Shani Amos 10 points, six boards and four assists.

Sami Whitcomb top-scored for the Flames with 26 points, 12 rebounds and three steals despite going 2-of-13 from beyond the arc.

The thriller of the night took place at Belmont Oasis with the Redbacks and Senators clash heading to overtime, where it was the home team who prevailed by a solitary point. The result means Perth improves to a 5-4 record on the season with Stirling slipping to 4-7.

The Senators shot well going 35-of-75 at 46 per cent but did cough up 25 turnovers of which the Redbacks managed to score 23 points from. Perth also did well getting to the line making 24-of-34 while Stirling got there just 18 times and made 13.

Ajay Jones had a standout performance for the Redbacks finishing with 30 points, four assists and four steals on 7-of-13 from the field, and 5-of-7 from deep.

Rebecca Benson added 24 points, six assists and five rebounds for Perth as well with Ashley Gilmore contributing 15 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and six steals, and Jessica Hughes 14 points. Alix Hayward collected 17 rebounds to go with four points, three steals and two assists.

Lyndal Gardner top-scored for the Senators with 22 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists with Amber Land contributing 16 points, 11 boards, six assists and four steals.

Chelsea Armstrong added 14 points for Stirling, Hannah Throns 12 points and four rebounds, Taylor Bestry 12 points, five boards and five assists, and Fiona Madden nine points and six rebounds.

The Hawks also continued their strong start to the season improving to a 7-2 record after a four-point win over the Lightning at Bendat Basketball Centre.

Lauren Jeffers had a big game for Perry Lakes with 27 points, 12 rebounds and two steals while hitting 4-of-6 from three-point territory.

Kate Anthony contributed 15 points and five rebounds for the Hawks, Sarah Donovan 14 points and seven boards, Emily Burton 11 points and eight rebounds, and Brieana Nolan 11 points and seven boards.

Alison Schwagmeyer did all she could to try and get the Lightning over the line with another 24 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Devanny King added 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Lakeside, Ashleigh Grant 14 points and seven boards, and Courtney Byrnes 10 points and six rebounds.

And in the Men's competition, the defending champion Wolfpack retained top spot in the standings with a 19-point road win over the Flames.

The Wolves had a terrific shooting night going 44-of-75 from the field at 58 per cent while nailing 14-of-26 from three-point range at 53 per cent. The Flames shot 43 per cent from the field and 53 per cent from beyond the arc as well but the Wolfpack had too many weapons.

Greg Hire delivered his best performance in his second game back at Joondalup with 26 points, four rebounds and four assists shooting 10-of-13 from the floor and 2-of-3 from deep.

Kevin Davis added 26 points and nine rebounds for the Wolves, Seb Salinas 17 points and five assists, Rob Huntington 17 points, six boards and three assists, and Ben Ironmonger 10 points.

Matthew Honey top-scored off the bench for the Flames with 31 points hitting 10-of-15 from the floor and 7-from-10 from downtown.

Jarryd Griffin contributed 16 points and eight rebounds for Rockingham, Taylor Land 14 points and four assists, Cooper Land 14 points and seven boards, and Chudier Pal eight points, six rebounds, three blocks and two assists.

The Hawks scored an important win at home to the tune of nine points over the Lightning. Perry Lakes improved to 6-6 with the win while Lakeside slipped to 4-7 after yet another loss after being in a winning position at three quarter-time.

The Lightning were in control leading 78-66 heading into the fourth quarter but the Hawks put in 38 points to 17 in the last period to score the nine-point win.

The Hawks also had a tremendous shooting night going 38-of-65 at 58 per cent along with 8-of-17 from three-point territory. Remarkably the Lightning took 36 more shots but hit one fewer at 37-of-101 at 36 per cent along with 9-of-38 at 23 per cent from the land of plenty.

Brian Carlwell top-scored for Perry Lakes finishing with 27 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots shooting 12-of-13 from the field.

Ben Dixon added 23 points and three assists for the Hawks, Ben Purser 18 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists, Jordan Hickert 13 points and five boards, and Rob Cassir 12 points and six assists.

Lakeside's imports both had good outings with Daniel Alexander finishing with 32 points and 17 rebounds, and TJ Hallice 30 points and four boards. Corey Martin contributed 12 points, 10 rebounds and three assists off the bench.

The Redbacks also scored an important win to stay in touch with a top eight position with a big 29-point victory at home over the Senators.

It was again a strong shooting performance behind the win with Perth nailing 48-of-92 from the field at 52 per cent and 14-of-37 at 37 per cent from beyond the arc. The Senators shot 36 per cent from the field and three-point range.

Michael Vigor showed how valuable he is in returning to the Redbacks by delivering 28 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots on shooting 12-of-21 from the field, and 2-of-3 from three-point land.

Lewis Thomas added 17 points and 16 rebounds for Perth, Reed McConnell 14 points, Joel Wagner 13 points and 10 assists, and Jourdan DeMuynck 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Kyle Lindbergh had another double-double for Stirling and top-scored with 19 points to go with 13 rebounds.

AJ Majstrovich added 16 points and five rebounds for the Senators, Cody Ellis 13 points, three boards and three steals, and Corban Wroe 12 points and four assists.
