Week 6 Sunday SBL wrap

THE Rockingham Flames scored Men's and Women's SBL victories over their 2016 co-tenants the Mandurah Magic on Sunday while the Perry Lakes Hawks handed the Goldfields Giants a second defeat inside 24 hours.

The Anzac Day long weekend SBL action continued on Sunday starting at Mike Barnett Sports Complex with the teams sharing the venue for 2016, the Mandurah Magic and Rockingham Flames locking horns.

The two-time defending champion Lady Flames scored a 65-56 victory over Magic and then the Rockingham men backed it up with an 81-76 win over Mandurah as well.

Sunday's other SBL fixture took place at Bendat Basketball Centre with the Perry Lakes Hawks defeating the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 95-90.

The lone Women's battle on Sunday was between the Magic and Flames and it was Rockingham who continued its winning form, but it took until the fourth quarter for them to find a way to get on top of Mandurah.

The Magic did a strong job for three quarters without Casey Mihovilovich against the Flames leading by four points at half-time and five at three quarter-time. But Rockingham delivered 23 points to nine in the fourth quarter to run out nine-point winners.

There were turnovers galore on both sides with Mandurah coughing the ball up 27 times and Rockingham 22 with neither team shooting well either with the Flames going 30 per cent from the field and 14 per cent from three, and the Magic 27 per cent from the floor and 38 per cent from three.

But the championship experience of the Flames helped them find something in the fourth quarter with Darcee Garbin top-scoring with 19 points to go with 15 rebounds. She shot 9-of-16 from the field.

Jacinta Bourne continued her outstanding start to the season with 17 points, five rebounds and two steals with Sami Whitcomb contributing 15 points and eight boards despite shooting just 3-of-14 from the field, and 2-of-10 from beyond the arc.

Adijat Adams finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots for the Magic with Emma Klasztorny contributing 16 points, four boards and two steals, and Rachel Halleen 10 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Then in the Men's contest at Mike Barnett Sports Complex, the Magic got off to a fast start with 31 first quarter points to 19 from Rockingham. But the Flames assumed control the rest of the way from there to eventually come through with a five-point victory.

Neither team shot well with the Flames going 34 per cent from the field and 23 per cent from three-point range, and the Magic 37 per cent from the floor, and 21 per cent from downtown. But Rockingham won the rebounding count by 10 and scored 23 second chance points while also forcing the Magic into 19 turnovers.

Chudier Pal continued his outstanding form for the Flames with 20 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots shooting 7-of-9 from the field and 6-of-8 from the foul line.

Cooper Land added 20 points, eight rebounds and two assists for Rockingham with Ryan Godfrey contributing 11 points and five boards, Justin Beard nine points, Taylor Land eight (nine rebounds, three assists) and Jarryd Griffin eight (five boards, three assists).

Taylor Mullenax top-scored for the Magic with 24 points and eight rebounds with Trevor Setty contributing 22 points and 11 boards, Jarrad Jackson 14 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Ben Smith 12 points and nine boards.

Then at Bendat Basketball Centre, the Hawks ended a three-game losing slide in a tight win over the Giants who also lost on the road to the Lakeside Lightning on Saturday night.

It was a close contest right the way with Perry Lakes managing to lead by eight at the end of the first period but that was whittled down to just the one-point by half-time after a big second period by the Giants.

It was only thanks to 28 points to 24 in the fourth quarter that saw the Hawks prevail with them managing to hit 11 threes for the afternoon a big factor in the eventual win in a contest where little separated the two outfits.

Jordan Hickert stepped up to have his best game since joining Perry Lakes for this season with 18 points and six rebounds hitting 7-of-11 from the field and 3-of-6 from the land of plenty.

Brian Carlwell contributed 17 points, 12 rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists for the Hawks, Ryan Smith 16 points, Ben Purser 16 points, 12 boards, six assists and three blocked shots, and Ryan O'Sullivan 10 points.

Ben Dixon also finished the afternoon with five points and eight assists for Perry Lakes.

Jacob Holmen delivered another big performance for the Giants with 34 points and 10 rebounds with Kenny Manigault finishing with 20 points, 10 boards and five assists. Russell Hurst also had 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists off the bench for Goldfields.
