Hawks and Giants men win to remain in playoff hunt (Week 15 Sunday SBL wrap)

KALAMUNDA'S women bounced back from a loss on Saturday to beat Perry Lakes on Sunday while the Goldfields Giants and Perry Lakes Hawks both had crucial victories also to keep their men's SBL playoff hopes alive.

There was just the one women's SBL match on Sunday to close Week 15 of the competition and it saw the Kalamunda Eastern Suns beat the Perry Lakes Hawks 84-68 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

There were two men's SBL matches on Sunday to close the round with the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants beating the Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars 108-100 at Wally Hagan Stadium and the Perry Lakes Hawks defeating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 112-71 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

In the women's contest on Friday night, the Eastern Suns bounced back from their loss to the Willetton Tigers on Saturday night that ended their nine-game winning streak by beating the Hawks by 16 points at home on Sunday.

The Suns improved to an 11-6 record with the win while the Hawks couldn’t back up their win over the Lakeside Lightning on Saturday night that ended their losing run.

Kalamunda now sits four games clear in fifth position of the chasing pack but still two games behind the third placed Mandurah Magic.

Madeleine Dennis top-scored for the Eastern Suns with 23 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals on the back of shooting 6-of-9 from the field.

Jessie Edwards added 22 points, eight boards and three blocked shots for Kalamunda with Rebecca Motroni contributing 15 points, Abbey Duinker 14 points and 13 boards, and Melissa Moyle eight points, seven rebounds and two assists.

Sarah Donovan ended up top-scoring for the Hawks with 16 points, four rebounds and three assists with Mia Satie adding 10 points and eight boards, Kassi Conditt 10 points and five rebounds, and Georgia Clarke nine points and three assists.

In the men's action on Sunday, the Giants backed up their win over the Stirling Senators on Saturday night to beat to the Cougars by eight points.

The win sees Cockburn's winning run come to an end at nine while Goldfields has now won four on the trot to improve to a 9-11 record to draw level with the eighth placed Lakeside Lightning. The Cougars still comfortably sit in third spot at 14-7 despite the loss.

Mathiang Muo top-scored for the Giants with 31 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists on the back of shooting 9-of-16 from the field.

Jay Bowie had another good game for Goldfields as well with 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists with Jacob Holmen contributing 20 points, 13 boards and six assists, Shamus Ballantyne 14 points, eight assists and six boards, and Edin Zunic 11 points and eight rebounds.

Najee Lane top-scored for the Cougars with 25 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two assists with Gavin Field contributing 24 points, nine boards, seven assists and three steals, Eric Milam 22 points and 13 rebounds on the back of shooting 8-of-15 from the field.

Sheldon McIntyre also continued to work hard for Cockburn finishing with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Hawks also continued their terrific recent form backing up their big win over the Joondalup Wolves last Friday and then on Saturday night over the Lakeside Lightning by 53 points to beat the Eastern Suns on the road on Sunday by 41 points.

Perry Lakes has now won three straight to improve to 7-12 to remain some hope of making the finals while the Eastern Suns remain last having lost 10 straight.

Bryton Hobbs was again the star for the Hawks with 30 points, three assists and three steals with Ryan O'Sullivan contributing 21 points off the bench.

Captain Ben Purser also added 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals for Perry Lakes in the win with Josh Garlepp contributing 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists, and Mike Krumel 11 points and five boards.

Lien Phillip top-scored for the Eastern Suns with 17 points, 15 rebounds and two assists with Seva Chan contributing 13 points, three boards and two assists. Jaarod Holmes also finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
