Double wins for Redbacks and Flames on impressive night (Week 10 Saturday night SBL wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames men and women both recorded strong SBL victories over the Willetton Tigers on Saturday night while the Perth Redbacks scored two upset wins over the South West Slammers, and the Goldfields Giants won a fourth successive match.

The three women's matches on Saturday were highlighted by the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames beating the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers 78-74 in the top-of-the-table clash at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

The Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves also defeated the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 93-45 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium and the Perth Redbacks downed the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 50-45 at Curtin Stadium.

There were five men's matches on Saturday night with the S & K Electrical Geraldton Buccaneers beating the Bethanie Stirling Senators 120-113 at Warwick Leisure Centre and the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants continued their winning ways beating the Mandurah Magic 120-92 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

The Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves also beat the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 107-76 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium, the Perth Redbacks downed the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 118-109 at Curtin Stadium and the Nags Head Tavern & Bistro Rockingham Flames defeated the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers 96-82 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

All eyes were on the top-of-the-table clash between the Flames and Tigers on Saturday night, and it was the defending champions Rockingham who prevailed in a four-point thriller.

The Tigers did lead 41-36 at half-time, but the Flames got going in the third quarter outscoring them 23 points to 14 and then held firm in the final period to return to the top of the standings after Willetton briefly leapfrogged them after Friday night.

Samantha Whitcomb top-scored for the Flames with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists with Darcee Garbin adding 17 points and five boards.

Jacinta Bourne also finished with 15 points, six boards, six assists and three steals for Rockingham while hitting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Tarsha Fletcher contributed 11 points also for the Flames with Talisia Bourne adding nine points and six boards, and Lizel Buckley five points and nine rebounds.

Kate Malpass did all she could for the Tigers finishing the night with 25 points and seven rebounds with Louella Tomlinson adding 15 points, six boards, five blocked shots and two assists.

Ebony Antonio also added 13 points and five assists with Willetton with Desiree Kelley contributing six points and four rebounds, and Lisa Wallbutton four points and 11 boards.

The Redbacks women then were able to end their losing slide with five-point win over the Slammers at Curtin Stadium even if both teams only combined for 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Gaby Clayton led the way for Perth with 17 points and eight rebounds with Jess Jakens contributing 12 points, eight boards and four steals.

Alix Hayward contributed four points and 11 rebounds, Meike Elkington four points, 11 boards and four steals, and Lauren Hall six points and seven rebounds.

Patricia Bright did all she could for the Slammers ending up with 19 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots with Deanica McCormick adding 15 points, three boards, three assists and three steals but they didn’t have enough help scoring 34 of South West's 45 points.

The Lady Wolfpack scored a thumping 48-point win over the Eagles at home on Saturday night with Rebecca Mercer returning to the starting line-up and ending up the top-scorer with 23 points, five assists and four rebounds while shooting 9-of-19 from the field and 4-of-9 from downtown.

Nikita-Lee Martin also added 20 points, eight boards, three assists and two steals for the Wolves with Casey Lockwood contributing 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists, Shani Amos 13 points, seven boards, six assists and three steals, and Alex Kerr 10 points and eight rebounds.

Nicole Jorre St Jorre led the way for the Eagles with 14 points and six rebounds but no other East Perth player scored more than seven points or had more than six boards.

In the men's action on Saturday night, the Buccaneers rebounded from their second loss of the season last week to the Slammers by scoring a come from behind win over the Senators at Warwick.

The Senators were terrific in the first three quarters opening up a 92-78 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the Buccs then piled on 40 points in the final period to score the seven-point win. The victory sees Geraldton improve to an 11-2 record while Stirling is 5-8 having lost four straight.

Bennie Lewis had a big night in the finish for the Buccaneers with 40 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals while shooting 11-of-24 from the floor, 5-of-11 from three-point range and 13-of-16 from the free-throw line.

Carter Cook added 24 points and nine rebounds as well for Geraldton and Aaron Ralph 20 points and 10 boards with Quincy Hankins-Cole contributing 17 points and Mat Wundenberg 12 to go with 12 rebounds.

The Senators' five starters all did a terrific job scoring all but eight of their team's points on the night with Jayden Coburn leading the charge with 27 points and three steals while shooting 9-of-17 from the floor and 4-of-8 from downtown.

Austin Bruton also had 23 points, five boards and three assists for Stirling while Jordan Wild finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds, Ryan Woodbury 18 points and five boards, and Kyle Lindbergh 17 points and four assists. Ashley Litterick contributed eight points and six rebounds off the bench.

The Giants continued their impressive form scoring a fourth successive victory after losing the opening eight of the season. Goldfields came to Mandurah and Saturday night and went away with the 28-point victory to continue to close in on a top eight berth.

Mathiang Muo was the leading scorer on the night for the Giants with 34 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals on the back of a good shooting night with 13-of-21 from the field and 6-of-11 from beyond the arc.

Jay Bowie also contributed 25 points and five rebounds for Goldfields while Jacob Holmen finished with 19 points and 10 boards, and Russell Hurst 18 points and nine rebounds on the back of hitting a super efficient 7-of-9 from the floor.

Ben Smith top-scored for the Magic with 25 points and 12 rebounds with Rhett Della adding 19 points, six boards and four steals, Paul Hafford 12 points, five rebounds and five assists, and Daniel Florance 10 points and six boards.

The Wolves scored a convincing 31-point win over the Eagles at home with Joondalup improving to an 11-2 record having now won five straight while East Perth remains anchored to the bottom of the table with a 1-12 record having lost 12 matches on the trot.

Damian Matacz top-scored for Joondalup off the bench with 20 points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists while shooting 9-of-10 from the floor.

Seb Salinas added 17 points for the Wolves, Kevin Davis 17 points and 13 rebounds, Rob Huntington 15 points, six boards, three steals and two assists, Joel Questel 11 points and five assists, and Trian Iliadis seven points, five rebounds and four assists.

Drew Williamson top-scored for the Eagles with 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals while Sunday Dech contributed 14 points, six boards and four assists, Keanu Pinder 13 points and Rhys Vague 12 points and six rebounds.

The Redbacks recorded the upset of the night in the men's SBL action beating the league-leading Slammers by nine points at Curtin Stadium despite South West coming home hard in the fourth quarter.

The win snaps a four-game losing run for the Redbacks to improve them to a 5-9 record while the Slammers remain on top of the standings with a 12-2 record.

Ray Turner backed up his 50-point performance on Friday night with another 34 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks, two steals and two assists for the Redbacks on the back of shooting 14-of-21 from the field.

Adam Johnston had a good night as well for Perth with 26 points while Joel Wagner finished with 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds, Ben Smith 17 points and six boards, and Marshall Brown 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Brian Voelkel led the way for the Slammers finishing the night with 30 points, 22 rebounds and seven assists while hitting 8-of-12 from the floor and 14-of-16 from the free-throw line.

Tre Nicholls added 25 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists as well for South West with Clive Weeden contributing 20 points, Ty Harrelson 17 and Wade Hitchcock 11.

The Flames then improved to a 7-6 record with a 14-point win over the fourth place Tigers at Rockingham on Saturday night.

Cooper Land had a remarkable night for the Flames finishing with 45 points, 18 rebounds and four assists while shooting 14-of-28 from the floor, 7-of-10 from three-point range and a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Tom Remmerswaal added 14 points for Rockingham with Matthew Honey contributing 10 points, Taylor Land 10 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Ryan Godfrey 10 points, five boards and five assists.

Damien Scott top-scored for the Tigers with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists with Ephrem Davis contributing 15 points and 11 boards, Kyle Armour 15 points and four assists, Nic Cody 10 points and 15 rebounds, and Corey Easley 10 points and five boards.
