Magic, Flames, Tigers remain without a loss (Week 5 Women's SBL Wrap)

THE Mandurah Magic, Rockingham Flames and Willetton Tigers all remain unbeaten in the women's SBL after five rounds while the Kalamunda Eastern broke their duck on Saturday night with a thrilling win despite the best efforts of Deanna Smith for the Cockburn Cougars.

The Magic, Flames and Tigers all recorded another win across Week 5 to stay unbeaten while the Suns won their first game of 2015 and last year's grand finalists the Lakeside Lightning remain winless following losses to the Magic and Flames on Friday and Sunday respectively.

The two women's matches on Friday night to open Round 5 saw the Mandurah Magic beat the Lakeside Lightning 67-57 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, and the Perry Lakes Hawks defeat the Stirling Senators 73-54 at Warwick Leisure Centre.

There were three women's matches on Saturday night with the Willetton Tigers beating the East Perth Eagles 74-68 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre, the Joondalup Wolves downed the South West Slammers 85-63 at Eaton Recreation Centre and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns won a thriller 78-75 over the Cockburn Cougars at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

There was just the one women's SBL match on Sunday to conclude the Week 5 action with the Rockingham Flames beating the Lakeside Lightning 95-56 at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

After five rounds, the Mandurah Magic (6-0) remains on top of the standings narrowly ahead of the Rockingham Flames (5-0) and Willetton Tigers (5-0).

Rounding out the top eight are the Joondalup Wolves (3-1), South West Slammers (4-2), Perry Lakes Hawks (3-2), Cockburn Cougars (3-4) and Perth Redbacks (2-3).

Then outside the top eight is the Kalamunda Eastern Suns (1-3) and Stirling Senators (1-5) while the East Perth Eagles (0-7) and Lakeside Lightning (0-6) remain without a victory each in 2015.

There were again some outstanding individual performances across the weekend as well.

Starting on Friday night, Casey Mihovilovich was the star for Mandurah and she was the difference against Lakeside finishing with 30 points, nine steals, seven rebounds and four assists.

Briana Klasztorny added 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Magic as well with Emma Klasztorny contributing seven points, nine boards, four assists and three steals.

Ashleigh Grant top-scored for the Lightning with 23 points and seven rebounds with Amie Nash contributing 10 points, Tia Ucich seven, Alecia Knowles six (six rebounds) and Courtney Byrnes five (five rebounds, two assists and two steals).

Kassi Conditt led the way for Perry Lakes finishing the night with 23 points and nine rebounds while shooting 9-of-14 from the field.

Danika Pisconeri also contributed 12 points and 17 rebounds for the Hawks while Emily Burton added 10 points and seven boards off the bench.

Amber Land top-scored for the Senators with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Tegan Walker had 14 points, eight boards and four assists in her 350th SBL appearance.

In the women's action on Saturday night, Louella Tomlinson led the way for the Tigers with 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocked shots while shooting 5-of-6 from the floor and a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line.

Zoe Harper contributed nine points and 11 rebounds. Ebony Antonio added 10 points and four assists for Willetton with Lisa Wallbutton adding nine points, Lara Napier eight and Melissa Marsh seven.

Stephanie Jones did all she could for the Eagles finishing with 21 points and seven rebounds while Kelsey Maffin added 19 points, nine boards and three assists.

Madeleine Dennis led the way for the Eastern Suns off the bench with 20 points and four rebounds while hitting 3-of-5 from downtown.

Thea Lemberger also added 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals for Kalamunda with Jessie Edwards finishing with 15 points, 16 boards and four blocks while Melissa Moyle added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Natalia Soli'ai 12 points and 10 boards.

Playing-coach Deanna Smith had a terrific performance again for the Cougars with 34 points, eight rebounds and three assists while shooting 13-of-23 from the floor and 3-of-7 from deep. Katie Loberg also had 22 points and seven boards.

Rebecca Mercer led the way for the Wolves with 22 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots while Ellyce Ironmonger contributed 12 points and 10 boards, Nikita-Lee Martin 11 points and seven rebounds, and Nonila Martin eight points and seven assists.

Patricia Bright top-scored for the Slammers with 15 points and five rebounds with Deanica McCormick adding 13 points and Kelly Bastow 13 points.

And finally on Sunday, last year's MVP Samantha Whitcomb was again outstanding for the Flames finishing with 28 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists while shooting 9-of-15 from the field, 4-of-9 from beyond the arc and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Her partner in crime Darcee Garbin was also outstanding returning to the Rockingham line-up and contributing 25 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots.

Ashleigh Grant did all she could for the Lightning finishing with 26 points and 13 rebounds shooting 12-of-23 from the floor and 2-of-3 from three-point territory. Megan Craig added 13 points and three rebounds for Lakeside as well.
