Milo ensures Magic women stay unbeaten (Week 5 Friday night SBL wrap)

THE Mandurah Magic kept their unbeaten start to the women's SBL season going on Friday night to open Week 5 while the Magic men held on in a thriller against the Lakeside Lightning as well.

The two women's matches on Friday night to open Round 5 saw the Mandurah Magic beat the Lakeside Lightning 67-57 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, and the Perry Lakes Hawks defeat the Stirling Senators 73-54 at Warwick Leisure Centre.

Then in the two corresponding men's contests on Friday night, the Mandurah Magic beat the Lakeside Lightning in a 117-116 thriller at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, and the Stirling Senators defeated the Perry Lakes Hawks 98-88 at Warwick Leisure Centre.

The Magic women remained unbeaten this season and the Lightning still without a win following Friday night's action, but it was a far more competitive contest than that suggests.

Mandurah did start well keeping Lakeside to nine first quarter points, but by the end of the third period the Lightning was back within six points and had a real sniff of their first win of 2015 coming off last year's grand final appearance.

However, the Magic did just enough in the final quarter to hold and win by 10 points.

Once again it was Casey Mihovilovich who was the star for Mandurah and she was the difference finishing with 30 points, nine steals, seven rebounds and four assists.

Briana Klasztorny added 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Magic as well with Emma Klasztorny contributing seven points, nine boards, four assists and three steals.

Ashleigh Grant top-scored for the Lightning with 23 points and seven rebounds with Amie Nash contributing 10 points, Tia Ucich seven, Alecia Knowles six (six rebounds) and Courtney Byrnes five (five rebounds, two assists and two steals).

The other Friday night women's match saw the Hawks dominate the Senators in the second half to run out 19-point winners at Warwick.

Kassi Conditt led the way for Perry Lakes finishing the night with 23 points and nine rebounds while shooting 9-of-14 from the field.

Danika Pisconeri also contributed 12 points and 17 rebounds for the Hawks while Emily Burton added 10 points and seven boards off the bench.

Amber Land top-scored for the Senators with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Tegan Walker had 14 points, eight boards and four assists in her 350th SBL appearance.

The thriller of the night saw the Magic men beat the Lightning by a point in one of the most exciting games of the SBL season to date.

Rhett Della ended up leading the way for the Magic off the bench finishing with 30 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 9-of-12 from the field and 12-of-17 from the foul line.

Paul Hafford also had 25 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for Mandurah while Ben Smith contributed 13 points and eight boards, and Brendan Della 12 points and three assists.

Jordan Swing put in an incredible performance for the Lightning and did everything he could to get his team over the line with 48 points, six assists and four rebounds while shooting 18-of-29 from the floor, 5-of-8 from long range and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Luke Thomas also finished with 23 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Lakeside with Jesse Dixon adding 18 points, Brad Jackson 15 and Jarrad Prue eight to go with 17 rebounds.

The Senators dominated the Hawks over the first three quarters in the other men's match up on Friday night leading 79-54 at three quarter-time. Despite Perry Lakes roaring home with 34 points to 19 in the fourth quarter, Stirling still comfortably won by 10 points.
