Two massive Buccs wins highlight weekend's action (Week 2 Men's SBL Wrap)

Perth Redbacks import Marshall Brown had a stunning 48-point effort in Friday night's SBL action but it was last year's minor premiers the Geraldton Buccaneers who made the biggest Week 2 statement with big wins over the Perry Lakes Hawks and then Brown's Redbacks.

The Buccaneers had the two wins for the weekend but it is the South West Slammers, Joondalup Wolves and Rockingham Flames who remain unbeaten so far in 2015. The Goldfields Giants and Perry Lakes Hawks are yet to taste victory.

The men's Friday night matches for Week 2 saw the Perth Redbacks beat the Lakeside Lightning 107-104 at Lakeside Recreation Centre and the Cockburn Cougars beat the Perry Lakes Hawks 107-101 at Wally Hagan Stadium.

It was a full night of men's action on Saturday with five matches beginning with the Geraldton Buccaneers hammering the Perry Lakes Hawks 130-77 at the WA Basketball Centre and the Rockingham Flames downing the Goldfields Giants 106-92 at Neils Hansen Basketball Stadium.

The South West Slammers then beat the defending champion East Perth Eagles 111-85 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre while the Cockburn Cougars beat the Stirling Senators 108-100 at Warwick Leisure Centre and the Joondalup Wolves defeated the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 111-96 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

There were then three men's matches on Sunday with the Geraldton Buccaneers beating the Perth Redbacks 90-73 at Curtin University Stadium, the Mandurah Magic downing the Stirling Senators 109-90 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre and the Willetton Tigers defeating the East Perth Eagles 99-70 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

The weekend's results leave the South West Slammers (3-0) on top of the standings ahead of the Joondalup Wolves (2-0), Rockingham Flames (2-0), Geraldton Buccaneers (3-1), Willetton Tigers (2-1), Mandurah Magic (2-1) and Cockburn Cougars (2-1).

The Lakeside Lightning (1-2) are just inside the top eight followed by the Stirling Senators (1-2), Kalamunda Eastern Suns (1-2), Perth Redbacks (1-2), East Perth Eagles (1-3), Goldfields Giants (0-3) and Perry Lakes Hawks (0-3).

There were some tremendous performances right across the weekend with the one player scoring more than 40 points, another six going for more than 30, 26 more scoring 20 or more along with one player recording a triple-double and 16 having double-doubles.

The standout individual performances began on Friday night with Marshall Brown having a remarkable game for the Redbacks finishing with a massive 48 points to go with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.

He shot 17-of-31 from the field, 7-of-15 from downtown and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Fellow Perth import Ray Turner offered Brown great support finishing with 24 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Jordan Swing did all he could for the Lightning with 33 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals with Luke Thomas adding 20 points, six boards and five assists.

Gavin Field led the way for the Cougars with 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

But that is about usual. What was different than last week was the support he received with Najee Lane contributing 23 points, six rebounds and five assists while Eric Milam had 18 points and six boards, and Julian Pesava 18 points off the bench.

Ryan Smith top-scored for the Hawks with 29 points to go with eight rebounds while shooting an outstanding 10-of-13 from the field and 4-of-4 from three-point land.

Ben Purser again made a strong contribution with 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists with Bryton Hobbs finishing with 22 points, eight boards and five assists.

Then on Saturday night, Aaron Ralph top-scored for the Buccaneers with 30 points and seven rebounds while shooting 12-of-18 from the field and 6-of-11 from three-point territory.

Quincy Hankins-Cole also had a good night with 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for Geraldton with Bennie Lewis adding 18 points, Carter Cook 15, Daniel Thomas 12 and Isaac Smith 10 to go with six rebounds.

It was a tough night for the Hawks but Bryton Hobbs tried hard finishing with 25 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Flames scored a strong 14-point win over the Giants in Geraldton on Saturday night as well with Cooper Land the star for the game with 34 points, 12 rebounds and three steals while shooting 12-of-21 from the floor and 5-of-8 from downtown.

Jay Bowie did what he could for the Giants finishing with 27 points and nine rebounds with Jay Holmen contributing 14 points and 11 boards.

Tre Nicholls top-scored for the Slammers with 31 points while playing-coach Ty Harrelson finished with 24 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals. Trent Worthington added 12 points and 10 boards, and Brian Voelkel 11 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists.

It was an undermanned Eagles outfit with the defending champions without Sunday Dech, Rhys Vague and Tom Jervis, but Drew Williamson did what he could with 23 points. Jamie Barnett added 17 points and Nikola Donlagic 15.

Gavin Field once again led the way for the Cougars with 31 points, 13 rebounds and six assists while Najee Lane contributed 23 points, 10 boards, seven assists and five steals.

Steven Van Lit ran the point well ending up with 14 points with Sheldon McIntyre ending up with seven points and seven rebounds.

Ryan Woodbury top-scored for the Senators with 25 points with Cody Ellis adding 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Trian Iliadis had 25 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals for the Wolves while Round 1's Player of the Week Kevin Davis had another 22 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and three assists.

Kevin Anthony had 21 points for the Suns with Seva Chan adding 21 points and seven assists. Lien Phillip also finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds.

And on Sunday, Bennie Lewis was the star of the afternoon for the Buccs finishing with 30 points, six rebounds and four assists shooting 10-of-17 from the field.

Captain Matt Wundenberg added 14 points and 13 rebounds for Geraldton while Quincy Hankins-Cole again added 14 points and 16 boards.

Ben Smith did all he could to spark the Redbacks finishing with 21 points while hitting 6-of-11 from three-point territory.

Joel Wagner also had 10 points and four assists and Marshall Brown 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists for the Redbacks. After his 48 points on Friday night, Brown shot just 3-of-16 from the field for his 10 points on Sunday.

Captain Taylor Mullenax led the way for the Magic with 26 points and eight rebounds while shooting an efficient 11-of-15 from the floor.

Ben Smith also had 19 points and eight boards for Mandurah with Paul Hafford adding 21 points, six boards, five assists and two steals. Daniel Florance also contributed 10 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Cody Ellis put in another good showing for the Senators finishing with 22 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. Ashley Litterick contributed 19 points and five rebounds for Stirling.

Nic Cody top-scored for the Tigers with 26 points, 12 rebounds and three assists while shooting 8-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range.

Kyle Armour added 19 points, five rebounds and five assists for Willetton with Ephrem Davis contributing 17 points and eight rebounds, and Damien Scott 11 points, seven boards, three steals and two assists.

Rhys Vague led the way for the Eagles with 22 points and five rebounds but he did shoot just 9-of-25 from the field and 3-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Sunday Dech finished with 12 points and eight rebounds for East Perth with Jamie Barnett adding 10 points and Drew Williamson nine along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
