Double wins for Tigers and Magic to close round (Week 2 Sunday SBL wrap)

THE Mandurah Magic and Willetton Tigers women both remained unbeaten after wins in Sunday's SBL action while the Geraldton Buccaneers joined those respective men's teams as winners to close Week 2 of the 2015 season.

There were two women's matches on Sunday to conclude the second round of the season with the Mandurah Magic beating the Stirling Senators 68-58 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre and the Willetton Tigers defeating the East Perth Eagles 72-56 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

There were then three men's matches on Sunday with the Geraldton Buccaneers beating the Perth Redbacks 90-73 at Curtin University Stadium, the Mandurah Magic downing the Stirling Senators 109-90 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre and the Willetton Tigers defeating the East Perth Eagles 99-70 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

Mandurah's women overcame Stirling by 10 points to remain unbeaten after two matches so far in the 2015 season while the Senators slipped to a 1-2 record.

Casey Mihovilovich again led the way for the Magic with 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Emma Klasztorny contributed 12 points as well as four steals and three rebounds for Mandurah with Ashlee Sidebottom finishing with 10 points, 10 boards and three assists.

Shelley Boston also had seven points, 10 rebounds and four assists for Mandurah and Briana Klasztorny seven points, 10 boards, four assists and two steals.

Emma Berryman had a strong game for the Senators finishing with 19 points with Amber Land adding 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Tegan Walker also had 15 points, five boards, three assists and two steals. However, Walker and Land also combined for 19 of Stirling's 24 turnovers.

Willetton also remained unbeaten from two matches this season with a 16-point win over East Perth with the Eagles now having lost their opening four matches of 2015 to see their losing streak stretch to 20 matches.

Louella Tomlinson put in a match-winning performance for the Tigers with 20 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Ebony Antonio added 12 points and four boards for Willetton while Lara Napier had nine points, Kate Malpass eight, Lisa Wallbutton eight (12 rebounds, four assists) and Zoe Harper seven.

Haylee DeSousa finished with 15 points for East Perth with Denielle Lipscombe adding 13 points and five rebounds.

The men's action began with the Buccaneers backing up their 53-point thumping of the Hawks little more than 12 hours earlier with another win, this time beating the Redbacks by 17 points at Curtin.

Bennie Lewis was the star of the afternoon for the Buccs finishing with 30 points, six rebounds and four assists shooting 10-of-17 from the field.

Captain Matt Wundenberg added 14 points and 13 rebounds for Geraldton while Quincy Hankins-Cole again added 14 points and 16 boards. Aaron Ralph also had 11 points and eight boards and Carter Cook 11 points and four rebounds.

Ben Smith did all he could to spark the Redbacks finishing with 21 points while hitting 6-of-11 from three-point territory.

Joel Wagner also had 10 points and four assists and Marshall Brown 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists for the Redbacks. After his 48 points on Friday night, Brown shot just 3-of16 from the field for his 10 points on Sunday.

The Magic made their only appearance of the weekend up against the Senators at home, and came away with an impressive 19-point win over the Senators to improve to a 2-1 record while Stirling slipped to 1-2.

Captain Taylor Mullenax led the way for the Magic with 26 points and eight rebounds while shooting an efficient 11-of-15 from the floor.

Ben Smith also had 19 points and eight boards for Mandurah with Paul Hafford adding 21 points, six boards, five assists and two steals. Daniel Florance also contributed 10 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Cody Ellis put in another good showing for the Senators finishing with 22 points, 13 rebounds and three assists.

Ashley Litterick contributed 19 points and five rebounds for Stirling with Jayden Coburn adding 16 points and Austin Bruton 10.

The Tigers rounded out the weekend with their first appearance of the round as well and it was an impressive 29-point victory over the defending champion Eagles at home.

Willetton improved to a 2-1 record with the win while East Perth falls to 1-3 following two losses within 18 hours to the Slammers and then Tigers.

Nic Cody top-scored for the Tigers with 26 points, 12 rebounds and three assists while shooting 8-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range.

Kyle Armour added 19 points, five rebounds and five assists for Willetton with Ephrem Davis contributing 17 points and eight rebounds, and Damien Scott 11 points, seven boards, three steals and two assists.

Rhys Vague led the way for the Eagles with 22 points and five rebounds but he did shoot just 9-of-25 from the field and 3-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Sunday Dech finished with 12 points and eight rebounds for East Perth with Jamie Barnett adding 10 points and Drew Williamson nine along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
