Commencement of construction for the new $8 million Warwick Stadium expansion will be celebrated this week at a ceremonial ‘Turning of the Sod’ event to be attended by government, community and sporting dignitaries.

Significant planning and investment in this community sporting facility will see it grow to eight indoor sports courts, rivalling the biggest centres in the state, and include a new entrance, fitness centre and café to be constructed over the next 12 to 14 months.

Churches of Christ Sport & Recreation Association (CCSRA) will invest over $5.5million to this significant project with the City of Joondalup committing $2.3 million to see this major community facility become a reality.

The event to be held at Warwick Leisure Centre (soon to be rebranded Warwick Stadium) on Wednesday 4th March will see City of Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard, along with representatives of CCSRA and Churches of Christ in WA break ground on this exciting new project.

Mayor Pickard said the City of Joondalup was proud to be involved in a significant project that greatly enhances the availability of recreational services to the local community as well as attracting users from across the Perth metropolitan area.

“Sport and recreation plays a vital role in strengthening and engaging communities and building community spirit,” he said.

“Joondalup has been recognised nationally and internationally for the many healthy, sustainable lifestyle opportunities it offers the local community. A community that is strong in sport and recreation participation enjoys a greater level of health and well-being.

“With the population of the northern corridor expected to grow significantly over the next decade, the demand for state-of-the-art community facilities such as Warwick Stadium will only increase and I look forward to returning here when this multi-million-dollar project is complete.”

Invited guests include Perth Wildcats legend Mike Ellis, City of Joondalup CEO Garry Hunt and Andrea Mitchell MLA, who will join other community and sport leaders representing both local and state bodies.

The new Warwick Stadium will include:

• Four new indoor courts, taking the total to eight competition level indoor courts for basketball and volleyball, eleven in volleyball mode.
• Main display court that has 450 seat fixed grandstand, retractable bleacher seating and meets international basketball and netball standards.
• Enhanced ‘home court’ environment for Stirling Senators State Basketball League club.
• New 500sqm state of the art gym and group fitness room.
• New entrance and reception.
• New café.
• Construction time of 12-14 months at a cost of $8 million.

This will be a prominent landmark and exciting development for sport in the northern corridor of Perth.
