Flames, Lightning remain unbeaten (Week 5 Women's SBL Wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames and Lakeside Lightning remain unbeaten in the women's SBL after five rounds with both scoring impressive wins again in Week 5 action.

There were six women's SBL matches across the weekend with the Lakeside Lightning recording two victories with the Schweigen East Perth Eagles, Rockingham Flames, Mandurah Magic and Kalamunda Eastern Suns all notching one win apiece.

The round began on Friday night with the Eagles beating the Perth Redbacks 68-60 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre. Friday's other game saw the Flames defeat the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 82-65 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

There were then three women's matches on Saturday night with the Lakeside Lightning beating the Perry Lakes Hawks 67-49 at the WA Basketball Centre.

The Mandurah Magic defeated the Stirling Senators at Warwick Leisure Centre and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns knocked off the Joondalup Wolves 76-66 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

The round concluded on Sunday afternoon with the Lightning recording another victory, but only by the narrowest possible margin beating the Eastern Suns 70-69 at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

The results in Week 5 leave two unbeaten teams still in the women's SBL with the Rockingham Flames on top on a 5-0 record just ahead of the also 5-0 Lakeside Lightning.

The Cockburn Cougars (3-1) are third followed by the Mandurah Magic (4-2), Joondalup Wolves (2-2), Stirling Senators (2-2), Willetton Tigers (2-3) and Perry Lakes Hawks (2-3).

Just outside the top-eight are the Kalamunda Eastern Suns (2-4) followed by the East Perth Eagles (2-4), South West Slammers (1-2) and the Perth Redbacks 0-7.

Friday's star individual performers were led by East Perth's Stephanie Jones finishing with 33 points on 14-of-22 shooting from the field.

Jessica Jakens did all she could for the Redbacks finishing with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Darcee Garbin led the way for Rockingham with 28 points and 20 rebounds on 11-of-22 shooting from the field in a massive performance.

Lauren Jeffers worked hard for the Slammers with 22 points and 12 rebounds with Amy Patton adding 18 points and 15 boards.

Then on Saturday night, Krystal Stoneking was the star for Lakeside with 20 points and 15 rebounds with Courtney Byrnes adding 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots.

Sarah Donovan was the only Perry Lakes player to score in double-figures with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.

Casey Mihovilovich once again led the way for the Magic with 20 points, nine rebounds and three assists on the back of shooting 8-of-14 from the floor.

Kalamunda only suited up seven players but still got the job done with Adrienne Jones on fire with 27 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals while shooting 7-of-13 from the field.

Nikita-Lee Martin led the way for the Wolves with 20 points while Chelsea Burns added 16 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals and five assists.

Then on Sunday, Emily Fielding had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Lightning with Kari Pickens adding 20 points and 11 boards.

Adrienne Jones added 16 points for Kalamunda, Chelsea Armstrong 13 and Jennie Rintala 13 points and 15 rebounds.
