Both defending champions suffer losses (Week 5 Saturday night SBL wrap)

THE men's and women's defending SBL champions both suffered losses on Saturday night with Kalamunda upsetting Joondalup in women's action and Perry Lakes managing to knock off Lakeside in the men's competition.

There were three women's SBL matches on Saturday night with the Lakeside Lightning beating the Perry Lakes Hawks 67-49, the Mandurah Magic defeating the Stirling Senators 79-74 and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns downing the defending champion Joondalup Wolves 76-66.

The Lightning beat the Hawks by 18 points at Lakeside Recreation Centre to remain unbeaten from four games this season while the Hawks slipped to a 2-3 record.

Krystal Stoneking was the star for Lakeside with 20 points and 15 rebounds with Courtney Byrnes adding 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots, and Kari Pickens 11 points and nine boards.

Sarah Donovan was the only Perry Lakes player to score in double-figures with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.

The Magic then continued their impressive start to the 2014 campaign with a five-point win over the Senators at Warwick Leisure Centre with Mandurah now improving to a 4-2 record, and the Senators on 2-2.

Casey Mihovilovich once again led the way for the Magic with 20 points, nine rebounds and three assists on the back of shooting 8-of-14 from the floor.

Hailey Dunham added 14 points and five rebounds for Mandurah with Rachel Halleen contributing 13 points and seven boards, and Ashlee Sidebottom 10 and seven.

Then the Eastern Suns continued their revitalised form knock off the defending champion Wolves at Ray Owen Sports Centre by 10 points.

The Suns now improve to a 2-3 record while the Wolves are 2-2.

Kalamunda only suited up seven players but still got the job done with Adrienne Jones on fire with 27 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals while shooting 7-of-13 from the field.

Jennie Rintala added 14 points, eight boards, four assists, three blocks and two steals for the Eastern Suns with Sarah-Jane Knox finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Nikita-Lee Martin led the way for the Wolves with 20 points while Chelsea Burns added 16 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals and five assists. Ellyce Ironmonger also had nine points, 12 boards and three blocks.

There were five big men's matches on Saturday night with the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers scoring a big 116-80 win over the Cockburn Cougars.

The Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants then made it a double for the regional teams with a 110-100 win over the Willetton Tigers.

The Perry Lakes Hawks managed to hand the defending champion Lakeside Lightning their first loss of the season with a 111-105 victory.

The Stirling Senators again came up short with Cody Ellis in their line-up with the Mandurah Magic winning 107-101.

The Joondalup Wolves then scored an emphatic 115-75 win over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

The Buccaneers' 36-point win over the Cougars sees them improve to a 5-2 record on the season while the Cougars, after a good start, slip to 1-5.

Bennie Lewis finished with 32 points and seven rebounds on 12-of-23 shooting for the Buccs with Odartey Blankson adding 31 points and 10 boards shooting 10-of-16 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the foul line.

Carter Cook also contributed 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Geraldton.

Damien Scott had 19 points for the Cougars but shot just 2-of-12 from downtown with Anthony Borden adding 14 points, Gavin Field 12 and Seva Chan 11.

The Giants got their second win of the campaign in as many weeks when they beat the now bottom-of-the-table Tigers at home by 10 points.

Tommy Hannon was the star for the Giants with 33 points and a massive 19 rebounds on the back of shooting 13-of-22 from the floor.

Lordan Franich added 21 points, 11 rebounds, seven blocks and five assists for Goldfields with Duran Blue finishing with 19 points and 11 assists as well.

Quinn McDowell scored 35 points to go with 13 rebounds for the Tigers and fellow import John Dickson added 30 points, 10 boards and six steals, but it wasn’t quite enough.

The Hawks then continued their impressive form improving to a 3-3 record with a win over the previously unbeaten and on-fire Lightning by six points.

Justin Cecil showed what a valuable addition to the Hawks he will be with 35 points and seven rebounds with Corey Easley adding 22 points, Rob Cassir 17 and Ben Purser 16 to go with 12 rebounds and five assists.

Brad Tinsley finished with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Lightning with Jarrad Prue again on fire with 20 points and 21 rebounds shooting 10-of-11 from the floor.

Caleb Palkert also contributed 18 points, Jesse Dixon 15 and Brad Jackson 11.

Mandurah then took on Ellis and his Senators also on Saturday and came away with a six-point win with the Magic improving to 4-2 on the season and the Senators falling to 2-3.

Paul Hafford top-scored for the Magic with 29 points and 11 rebounds with Ben Smith adding 27 points and 14 boards, and Taylor Mullenax 27 and 16.

Josh Throns top-scored for Stirling finishing with 27 points and nine rebounds with Austin Bruton scoring 23 points and Ellis adding 17 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots.

The Wolves then improved to 4-1 with a comfortable 40-point victory over the now 2-4 Eastern Suns.

Trian Iliadis led the way for the Wolves with 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds while Rob Huntington contributed 23 points and 11 rebounds, Brendan Tucek 16 points and Seb Salinas 15 to go with 15 rebounds and seven assists.

Adhar Mayen led the way for the Eastern Suns with 22 points and six rebounds while Ben Smith had 20 points and Louis Timms 10.
