Suns have chance to show growth (Week 5 Men's SBL Preview)

WEEK 5 of the men's SBL competition offers the Kalamunda Eastern Suns the perfect chance to show just how much it has improved this season coming off two wins, and with clashes against last year's two grand finalists.

Week 5 of the men's SBL competition gets underway with two matches on Saturday night both tipping off at 8.30pm with the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles taking on the Perth Redbacks, and the Rockingham Flames facing the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers.

It's then a massive Saturday night of action across Western Australia.

The night starts with two regional fixtures starting at 7.30pm with the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers playing the Cockburn Cougars and the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants taking on the Willetton Tigers.

Then at 8pm, the Perry Lakes Hawks face the Lakeside Lightning and the Stirling Senators take on the Mandurah Magic.

The final match on Saturday night pits the Kalamunda Eastern Suns against the Joondalup Wolves at 8.30pm.

There is then just the one match on Sunday afternoon with the defending champion Lakeside Lightning hosting last year's wooden spooners the Kalamunda Eastern Suns at 4pm.

On Friday night, the Eagles host the Redbacks at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre with East Perth sitting just outside the top-eight on a 3-4 record and the Redbacks in sixth spot with a 3-3 record.

With the likes of Tom Jervis and Drew Williamson still sidelined, the Eagles will have a big task trying to keep the Redback in check, but with Kyle Armour coming off 86 points last weekend they will like their chances.

Friday's other men's fixture pits Rockingham up against South West at Mike Barnett Sports Complex with the Flames on fire with a 5-1 record while the Slammers sit on 2-2 after two straight losses to Lakeside and Geraldton.

One form team in the Buccaneers and one needing to find a win in the Cougars then meet at Active West Stadium on Saturday night.

Geraldton now sits in fourth position with a 4-2 record having won three straight matches against the Eagles, Hawks and Slammers.

Meanwhile, the Cougars have won just one game from five matches despite strong work from Damien Scott and Gavin Field who do need more support.

The Giants then host the Tigers at Neils Hansen Stadium with Goldfields having recorded their only win of the season last Saturday against the Cougars, and Willetton's only victory coming over Cockburn as well back on March 22.

The Hawks host the Lightning at the WA Basketball Centre with Perry Lakes coming off winning its first two games of the season last weekend against Cockburn and Willetton.

Meanwhile, the defending champion Lakeside remain unbeaten after four games.

The Senators then battle the Magic at Warwick Leisure Centre with Cody Ellis lining up for his second game with Stirling as his team looks to improve on its 2-2 record against a 3-2 Mandurah team who has lost Daniel Thomas for the season with a ruptured achilles.

The final match of Saturday night pits last year's wooden spooners Kalamunda up against last year's grand finalists Joondalup at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

The Suns started 2014 with three straight losses but they have now won two straight following victories over East Perth and Stirling while the Wolves sit in third position with a 3-1 record.

The round will then conclude on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Recreation Centre with the Lightning backing up from a clash with the Hawks on Saturday and the Eastern Suns having hosted the Wolfpack.
