Wolves, Suns in grand final rematch (Week 5 Women's SBL Preview)

JOONDALUP and Kalamunda meet for the first time since last year's women's SBL grand final this Saturday night with the Wolves looking to keep winning and the Eastern Suns to kick start their 2014 campaign.

The Week 5 action of the SBL begins with two women's matches on Friday night featuring the Schweigen East Perth Eagles playing the Perth Redbacks, and the Rockingham Flames battling the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers. Both games tip-off at 6.30pm.

There are then three women's matches to take place on Saturday night start at 6pm with the Perry Lakes Hawks facing the Lakeside Lightning, and the Stirling Senators taking on the Mandurah Magic.

Then at 6.30pm also on Saturday, the Kalamunda Eastern Suns face the defending champion Joondalup Wolves in a rematch from last year's grand final.

There is then just the one match on Sunday afternoon with the Lakeside Lightning facing the Kalamunda Eastern Suns at 2pm.

The Eagles and Redbacks clash this Friday night at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre. Both teams struggled in 2013 combining for just 11 wins between them.

Only one of those came courtesy of East Perth but the Eagles do appear a vastly-improved line-up this year already having beaten the Stirling Senators in Week 2.

They now host a Redbacks team that has had a horror start to 2014 with six straight losses by an average of over 40 points a game.

Friday night's other fixture pits the Flames up against the Slammers at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Rockingham sits atop the women's standings unbeaten after four games and will be refreshed coming into the clash with the Slammers after the bye last weekend.

Meanwhile, South West have played just the two matches over the opening four rounds recording a 14-point win at home to the Kalamunda Eastern Suns, but then suffering a 58-point thumping at the hands of Lakeside back on March 28.

Then on Saturday night, the Hawks host the Lightning at the WA Basketball Centre with Perry Lakes coming into the contest on a 2-2 record while the Lightning are unbeaten after three matches.

Stirling then hosts Mandurah at Warwick Leisure Centre with the Senators coming into the contest with a 2-1 record having beaten Kalamunda by 20 points last weekend while the Magic are 3-2 and coming off a win last Sunday over East Perth.

All eyes will then be the Ray Owen Sports Centre for the first grand final rematch of 2014 when the Eastern Suns host the Wolves.

Joondalup won big in last year's grand final and have gone on to start 2014 with a 2-1 record with wins over Willetton and Perth, and a loss to Rockingham.

Meanwhile, Kalamunda has made a slow start to the season after making last year's grand final sitting on a 1-3 record having lost to Cockburn, South West and Stirling with only a win over the Eagles thrown in.

The round then concludes on Sunday with the Lightning hosting the Suns at Lakeside Recreation Centre with Lakeside coming off a game against Perry Lakes on Saturday, and Kalamunda off its grand final rematch with the Wolfpack.
