Coaches react to Week 4 of the SBL

SOME SBL men's and women's coaches shared their thoughts on how their respective fourth round weekends of the 2014 season went.

WOMEN'S
COCKBURN COUGARS
Coach – Deanna Smith

We did have a few players out for our game on Friday but I still think we suited up a team that could have quite easily won. The Hawks came out ready to play and jumped out early on us, and unfortunately we were chasing our tail for the rest of the game. They did have a very big inside presence with Rosie Tobin and Sarah Donovan, and we were quite undersized so we struggled in that area.

JOONDALUP WOLVES
Coach – Vlad Alava

Positive response by our girls after the previous week’s loss. We had a game plan and for the better part we stuck to it. Still plenty to work on but definitely taking steps towards understanding our philosophies and what we need to do week in, week out in order to be up there with the contenders this year. Pleasing whole team performance.

Without Ellyce, it was definitely encouraging to see some of younger post players get some run up and down the floor and hold their own. Same for our younger guards. They young ones will be better for the experience.

MEN'S
ROCKINGHAM FLAMES
Coach – Mark Utley

It was great to grind out a win against a rapidly improving Giants outfit. I was especially pleased with the output of my three senior guards. It would be good to keep Cooper Land in the game a bit longer, though, so he can build momentum.

COLLIE CRANE HIRE SOUTH WEST SLAMMERS
Coach – Ty Harrelson

After last week's loss at Lakeside we had another tough road trip to Geraldton.

They came out hitting on all cylinders offensively. With four minutes left in the second quarter the Buccs had only missed three field goal attempts. Carter Cook was outstanding the entire game and we struggled to stop Bennie Lewis early.

The Geraldton squad looks like a serious contender this season. We won almost all statistical categories except field goal percentage. We also had 20 turnovers and needed to get to the free throw line more often.
