Wolves give Redbacks double trouble (Week 4 Sunday SBL wrap)

THE Joondalup Wolves women's and men's SBL teams beat the Perth Redbacks by a combined 96 points on Sunday while Kyle Armour's 43 points weren’t enough for the East Perth men against Lakeside.

There were two women's SBL matches on Sunday to close out Week 4 action and it saw the Joondalup Wolves score an incredible 100-36 thumping of the Perth Redbacks at Joondalup Basketball Stadium and the Lakeside Lightning beating the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 96-67 at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

The defending champion Wolves hammered the winless Redbacks by 64 points with Joondalup improving to a 2-1 record on the season while Perth slumped to its sixth straight loss and they have now come at an average of 40.3 points a game.

Chelsea Burns top-scored for the Wolves with 21 points, seven steals, six rebounds, four blocked shots and two assists on the back of 9-of-12 shooting.

Nikita-Lee Martin also added 17 points, nine boards, five steals and five assists while Tarryn MacPherson scored 14 points, Megan Lee 11 and Amanda Frontino 11.

No Redbacks player managed to reach double-figures with Jessica Hughes and Jessica Jakens scoring eight points each.

Lakeside also continued its impressive start to the women's season remaining unbeaten after three games with a 29-point win at home over the now 1-4 Eagles on Sunday.

Kari Pickens led the way for the Lightning with 23 points, 20 rebounds and four assists with Krystal Stoneking adding 19 points, Chanah Crugnale 15 and Emily Fielding 12.

Stephanie Jones was again the standout for East Perth with 27 points and eight rebounds with Jodee Santay also scoring 10 points.

And in men's action on Sunday, the Rockingham Flames improved to a 5-1 record with a 113-85 victory over the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants.

The Lakeside Lightning remained unbeaten with a 113-104 victory over the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles and the Joondalup Wolves thumped the Perth Redbacks 113-81 with the Wolfpack improving to a 3-1 record and the Redbacks slipping to 3-3.

The Flames had five players score in double-figures in what was a strong even performance in the win at home by 28 points on Sunday over the Giants.

Cooper Land top-scored with 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point land.

Andrew Bowman added 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists with Jarryd Griffin adding 16 points, Taylor 15 and Travis Moore 13 to go with nine boards.

Duran Blue led the way for Goldfields with 28 points and six rebounds on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and 6-of-10 from three-point range.

Russell Hurst also added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Giants.

The defending champion Lightning continued their unbeaten start to the season downing the Eagles by nine points and despite another 43-point effort from Kyle Armour.

Brad Tinsley top-scored for Lakeside with 29 points and six assists on 10-of-16 shooting and 3-of-5 from downtown.

Caleb Palkert contributed 27 points and 10 rebounds as well while shooting 11-of-17 from the floor and a perfect 3-of-3 from long range.

Jarrad Prue once again was simply superb for the Lightning with 21 points, 31 rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocked shots while shooting a perfect 10-of-10 from the field.

Brad Jackson also contributed 15 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Armour was once again the star for the Eagles despite the loss scoring 43 points for the second day on the trot. This time he finished with 43 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists while shooting 19-of-37 from the field.

Sunday Dech also contributed 25 points and seven rebounds for East Perth with Nathan Friend adding 10 points and Nikola Donlagic 10 to go with seven rebounds.

The Wolves then thrashed the Redbacks on Sunday also with Rob Huntington leading the way for the Wolfpack with 22 points and nine rebounds.

Trian Iliadis contributed 20 points, six boards and five assists with Seb Salinas adding 19 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

Joel Wagner top-scored for the Redbacks with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists with Jarrad Jackson adding 13 points, Marshall Nelson 12 and Dennis Tawhiti 11.
