Tigers women, Hawks men get another win (Week 4 Saturday night SBL wrap)

THE Willetton Tigers women and Perry Lakes Hawks men both got their second wins of the weekend to highlight Saturday night's SBL action with Kalamunda also spoiling Cody Ellis' first appearance for Stirling.

There were three women's SBL matches on Saturday night with the Stirling Senators improving to a 2-1 record with a 75-55 win over the now 1-3 Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

The Mandurah Magic then improved to a 3-2 record on the season with a 77-70 win over the Schweigen East Perth Eagles.

And in a game rescheduled from the previous Saturday night, the Willetton Tigers got their second win of the weekend after a winless start to the season, recording a 67-45 win over the Perry Lakes Hawks at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

Joriah Smith led the way for the Magic with 22 points with Casey Mihovilovich adding 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Ashlee Sidebottom also contributed 12 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots for Mandurah.

Stephanie Jones had an outstanding night for the Eagles finishing with 30 points and 15 rebounds. Emily Burton also contributed 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Tegan Walker led the way for the Senators in their win over the Suns finishing with 17 points and nine rebounds on the back of shooting 7-of-12 from the field.

Lyndal Gardner added 15 points, Taylor Wild 11 (seven assists, five rebounds) and Hannah Throns 10 (four boards, three assists).

Jennie Rintala top-scored for Kalamunda with 16 points and eight rebounds with Adrienne Jones adding 15 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Antonia Edmondson had a terrific game for Willetton in the win over Perry Lakes with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists. Melissa Marsh made her first appearance of the season and first since retiring from the WNBL, and had 15 points, six assists and five rebounds as well for the Tigers.

Anna Kovats was the only Perry Lakes player to score in double-figures finishing with 13 points and six rebounds.

There were five massive men's clashes on Saturday night across Western Australia and now there is just the one unbeaten team left in the competition, and no side is without a victory.

The Stirling Senators, and Cody Ellis, couldn’t get over line against Kalamunda with the Eastern Suns running out 125-116 winners to record their second win so far on the season.

The Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles then scored an incredible 148 points to beat the Mandurah Magic by 30 with the Eagles improving to a 3-3 record and the Magic slipping to 3-2.

Willetton and Perry Lakes then played out the clash that was meant to take place last Saturday night, and it was the Hawks who prevailed over the Tigers 132-112.

Perry Lakes came into the weekend without a win so far this season, but now has recorded two within 24 hours after also beating the Cockburn Cougars on Friday night. Meanwhile, Willetton slips to a 1-4 record.

Also on Saturday night, the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers prevailed over the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 120-100 and the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants got off the mark for 2014, winning a thriller 98-97 over the Cockburn Cougars.

Geraldton came out on top of the battle of the regional powers with a 20-point win over South West with Bennie Lewis leading the way for the Buccaneers with 34 points.

Carter Cook added 28 points with Aaron Ralph finishing with 17 points and eight rebounds, and Odartey Blankson 12 points.

All eyes were on Cody Ellis' first appearance with the Stirling Senators on Saturday night, but it was Kalamunda who stole the show recording a nine-point victory.

Kerrod Horn led the way for the Eastern Suns with 33 points shooting 5-of-10 from downtown.

Ben Smith also added 32 points and six assists with Louis Timms finishing with 29 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

Joel Questel also scored 12 points to go with five rebounds and five assists for the Suns with Mike Krumel contributing 11 points.

Josh Throns finished with 24 points and six rebounds for the Senators with Jordan Wild contributing 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Ellis 18 points and nine rebounds, Austin Bruton 15 points and Ryan Woodbury 12.

The Eagles put together an incredible scoring display to beat the Magic by 30 points with Kyle Armour leading the way with 43 points, six rebounds and six assists while shooting 7-of-10 from three-point range, and a perfect 12-of-12 from the foul line.

Sunday Dech wasn’t far behind with 35 points, 10 rebounds and six assists shooting 13-of-25 from the floor.

Nikola Donlagic also contributed 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the winning East Perth.

Taylor Mullenax did all he could for the Magic finishing with 37 points and eight rebounds with Paul Hafford adding 26 points and nine boards, Daniel Thomas 18 points and Ben Smith 14 to go with nine rebounds.

Goldfields got its first win of the season by beating Cockburn by a point with Tommy Hannon outstanding with 33 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists on the back of shooting 14-of-20 from the field.

Duran Blue wasn’t far behind for the Giants with 28 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Miles Tierney also contributed 17 points for the Giants.

Damien Scott top-scored for the Cougars with 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists with Gavin Field finishing with 23 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Anthony Borden added 13 points and eight rebounds with Steven Van Lit contributing 10 points, nine boards and four assists, and Seva Chan 10 points and four assists.
