Flames continue hot form (Week 3 Sunday SBL wrap)

ROCKINGHAM'S hot form continued on Sunday afternoon with the Flames' men's and women's SBL teams recording impressive victories over the Wanneroo Wolves.

There were three men's SBL matches on Sunday afternoon with the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers beating the Perry Lakes Hawks 113-97, the Rockingham Flames winning a thriller 106-105 over the Wanneroo Wolves and the Mandurah Magic defeating the Cockburn Cougars 107-101.

There were also two women's matches on Sunday with the Rockingham Flames beating the Wanneroo Wolves 68-60 and remarkably the Cockburn Cougars beat the Mandurah Magic with the exact same score, 68-60.

Geraldton's men's team scored its second win of 2014 beating the Hawks by 16 points at the WA Basketball Centre on Sunday.

Once again it was Odartey Blankson who starred for the Buccaneers finishing with 34 points and 14 rebounds on the back of shooting 13-of-23 from the field, 2-of-4 from long range and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.

Bennie Lewis added 25 points for the Buccaneers as well with Carter Cook scoring 20 points and five rebounds, and Aaron Ralph 21 points and nine rebounds off the bench on the back of 6-of-11 shooting from the field, and 3-of-6 from downtown.

Josh Garlepp top-scored for the Hawks off the bench with 20 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 8-of-11 from the field.

Justin Cecil also contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds, Ben Purser 14 points, five assists and four boards, Corey Easley 14 points, 12 boards and six assists and Ben Dixon 14 points and six rebounds.

Rockingham's hot men's form continued on Sunday downing last year's grand finalists Wanneroo improving to a 4-1 record and handing the Wolves their first loss by winning by a solitary point at Joondalup Basketball Centre.

Cooper Land led the Flames to the victory finishing with 40 points, 12 rebounds and three assists shooting 14-of-27 from the floor.

Tom Remmerswaal added 18 points and nine rebounds for Rockingham while Taylor Land finished with 17 points, six boards, four assists and three steals, and Jarryd Griffin 14 points and five rebounds.

Trian Iliadis did all he could for the Wolves with 37 points and five rebounds with Rob Huntington adding 16 points and Seb Salinas 13 to go with 11 rebounds and four assists.

And then the now 3-1 Magic scored a six-point win over the now 1-2 Cougars at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

Taylor Mullenax starred for the Magic with 41 points, 23 rebounds and four blocked shots while shooting 16-of-27 from the field.

Ben Smith added 30 points and 15 boards also for Mandurah while Daniel Thomas finished with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.

It was again a two-man show for the Cougars with Damien Scott finishing with 34 points and 11 rebounds, and Gavin Field 32 points and 16 boards.

The Flames continued their unbeaten start to the 2014 women's SBL season with an eight-point victory over the defending champion Wanneroo Wolves at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

Samantha Whitcomb was the star of the afternoon for Rockingham finishing with 28 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three rebounds while nailing 7-of-10 from three-point territory.

Talisia Bourne also contributed 12 points and six boards for the Flames with Darcee Garbin finishing with 11 points and six rebounds.

Nikita-Lee Martin was the only Wolves player, meanwhile, to score in double-figures with 21 points, seven rebounds and two assists while shooting 9-of-18 from the floor.

And in Sunday's other women's clash, the Cougars improved to a 3-0 record to open the 2014 campaign with an eight-point victory against the Magic at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

Emma Pass finished with 17 points and eight rebounds for Cockburn with Marita Payne adding 16 points and 17 rebounds.

Sam Richards also contributed 14 points, four rebounds and two assists for the Cougars while Taryn Priestly scored 12 points and dished out seven assists.

Briana Klasztorny top-scored for the Magic with 19 points and six assists with Casey Mihovilovich adding 18 points, six rebounds and four assists while Gemma Thomas contributed 11 points and seven boards.
