Double wins for Suns, Lightning (Week 3 Friday night SBL wrap)

BOTH the Kalamunda Eastern Suns and Lakeside Lightning recorded impressive men's and women's wins in SBL Week 3 action on Friday night.

The results mean that both the Lightning's men's and women's teams remain undefeated so far in 2014 while each Suns outfit recorded their first victories of the new season as well.

The women's results on Friday night saw the Lakeside Lightning hammer the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 115-57 and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns defeat the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 67-58.

And in men's action, the Lightning beat the Slammers 123-94 and the Suns downed the Eagles 108-102.

Kalamunda's men's team got on the board for 2014 with an impressive six-point victory over East Perth on Friday at Ray Owen Sports Centre on the back of a 41-point final quarter, and by outscoring the Eagles 65-48 in the second half.

Ben Smith was the star of the night for the Eastern Suns finishing with 36 points on the back of hitting 8-of-13 from three-point range.

Adhar Mayen also added 17 points and 10 boards for the Suns while Louis Timms contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, Ngor Mangyang 11 points and Jared Zornada 10.

Kyle Armour did all he could for the Eagles finishing with 27 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while hitting 4-of-7 from three-point territory.

Drew Williamson added 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists as well for East Perth with Austin Kisselev contributing 15 points and 14 boards, Nikola Donlagic 13 points and Sunday Dech 13.

The defending champion Lightning also celebrated their first game at home for 2014 by remaining unbeaten and handing the Slammers their first defeat of the new season with a 29-point victory on Friday night at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

Brad Tinsley led the way for the Lightning finishing with 24 points, six rebounds and five assists with Steven Butler adding 21 points, Caleb Palkert 20, Brad Jackson 18, Darrel Morgan 12 and Jarrad Prue 10 to go with another incredible 24 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots.

Jonathan Todd Hendley did all he could for the Slammers finishing with 29 points while shooting 12-of-22 from the field.

Patrick Phillips added 18 points, Ty Harrelson 15 (eight rebounds, six assists), Clive Weeden 13 and Wade Hitchcock 11.

Kalamunda's women's team got their first win of 2014 coming off last year's grand final appearance beating the Eagles by nine points at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

Chelsea Armstrong led the way for the Eastern Suns with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists while Rebecca Motroni added 12 points, Jennie Rintala 11 (13 rebounds), Jessie Edwards 11 and Sarah-Jane Knox nine to go with six rebounds and four assists on the back of shooting an efficient 4-of-6 from the field.

Jodee Sontay top-scored for the Eagles with 14 points while Dannielle Devenny added 10 points and Stephanie Jones 10 to go with 11 rebounds.

Friday night's other women's SBL match saw the Lightning open their season at home with an incredible 58-point thrashing of a Slammers team who had yet to taste defeat in 2014.

It was a dominant showing from the Lightning who scored 37 points in the fourth quarter, 30 in the second, 26 in the first and 22 in the third to end up scoring 115 points and winning by 58.

Emily Fielding top-scored for Lakeside with 26 points, five rebounds and three assists with Krystal Stoneking adding 25 points and nine boards on the back of shooting 9-of-16 from the floor.

Kari Pickens also added 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Lightning with Ashleigh Grant contributing 13 points and five boards, Courtney Byrnes 10 points and Jess Van Schie nine.

It was a tough night for the Slammers with Lauren Jeffers finishing with 13 points, Bianca Donovan 12 and Catherine Waycott 11.
