Magic Week for Mandurah (SBL Players of the week)

The week one, Men’s SBL Player of the Week has been awarded to Daniel Thomas of the Mandurah Magic.

The decision for Mandurah to recruit Thomas in the off-season proved to be an excellent move by the club as the Magic went on to defeat the Perry Lakes Hawks 129-119 on the back of DT’s game high 38 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists.

On Sunday, Thomas looked settled and composed in the Magic’s new look line-up as they demonstrated to the league why Mandurah should be considered Championship contenders in 2014.

Mullenax, Smith and Della form a formidable front court, while the likes of Daniel Thomas, Trent Gerovich and import Paul Hafford pose serious scoring threats from beyond the arc which will be sure to cause headaches for many opposition coaches this year.

If Mandurah’s line-up continues to gel like it did on Sunday, particularly at the offensive end where they put on 129 points, don’t be surprised to see them feature heavily come finals time in August.

There were a number of impressive individual performances in the Men’s SBL this weekend which were also considered for the award including;

Cooper Land (Rockingham): (33 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists), Bennie Lewis (Geraldton): (41 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assists) & (27 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assists), John Dickson (Willetton): ( 41 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists), Stanley Okoye (Perth): (30 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists) & (28 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists), Damien Scott (Cockburn): (28 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists), Gavin Field (Cockburn): (28 points, 16 rebounds, 3 assists), Jarrad Prue (Lakeside): (11 points, 31 rebounds, 2 assists), Cory Cooperwood (Stirling): (31 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists), Ty Harrelson (South West): (31 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists) and Kyle Armour (East Perth): (17 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists) & (22 points, 10 rebounds & 10 assists).

The week one, Women’s SBL Player of the Week has been awarded to Casey Mihovilovich of the Mandurah Magic.

In her 350th SBL game on Sunday at the WA Basketball Centre, Mihovilovich was outstanding leading her team to an impressive 75-58 victory over the Perry Lakes Hawks.

Casey was back to her 2011 league MVP best, accumulating impressive stats across the board which included 23 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals.

When Casey is putting up these kind of numbers, the Magic are a dangerous opposition for any team and if Milo can continue this form throughout 2014, you will be sure to see many more wins on the board than the previous season.

Unlucky to miss out on the week one award was Rockingham’s star import Samantha Whitcomb who also covered the stats sheet recording 29 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals in the Flames thrashing of the Perth Redbacks 94-50 on Friday night.

Other considerations for the award included;

Marita Payne (Cockburn): (17 points, 13 rebounds, 1 assist), Tegan Walker (Stirling): (17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists), Samantha Richards (Cockburn): (22 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists), Lisa Wallbutton (Willetton): (15 points, 13 rebounds, 1 assist), Ellyce Ironmonger (Joondalup): (16 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist), Jessica Jakens (Perth): (18 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist), Clare Thomson-Boston (East Perth): (23 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists) and Jennie Rintala (Kalamunda): (22 points, 6 rebounds).
